Girish Karnard wrote the play “Broken Images''. He was an actor, movie director and contemporary playwright. He was born on 19th May 1938 and passed away on 10th June 2019. He has received many prestigious awards like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Jnanpith award. He was active in Hindi cinema and wrote in both English and Kannada. NCERT Class 12 English Chapter 2 Broken Images play has many layers to it. It deals with the issue of bilingualism in India, especially related to the English language. It also throws light on moral values, both in personal as well as academic spheres.

One can see the love of two sisters in the play and also contemplate on how genuine it was. It shows how sometimes people use relationships to their advantage. The whole play is an exchange of dialogues between a female playwright and her image, where the image questions many incidents of her life, making the playwright uneasy and indignant.

Kaliedoscope - Broken Images

The play starts with the protagonist, Manjula Nayak speaking to her viewers in a television studio. She is taking directions from either the production manager or the director and assures that her speech would be only for ten minutes. She seems confident and laughs and talks in an easy-going way.

There is a Kannada telefilm being telecast that evening which was written by Manjula Nayak in English. Manjula seems to be a feminist as she says she does not let marriage interfere too much in her life. As a playwright, she keeps her maiden name “Manjula Nayak” though, after marriage, her official name changed to “Manjula Murthy”.

She discusses why she chose to write in English despite being a Kannadiga and also a Kannada writer. She speaks about all her near and dear ones who were offended by her English writing and felt that she betrayed her mother tongue. However, Manjula does not feel so and says that this specific play just came out in English naturally from her. To her defence, she also says that her play became very famous in the UK and the British publishers told her that her play was very Indian. Unlike many Indian writers who write in English with western readers in their minds, her play gives a genuine Indian feel.

Another question that she was asked a lot was how could she, an athlete in her college days, write about someone who was bed-ridden all through her life. She then discloses that this character that was confined to bed is inspired by her sister, who was physically challenged and stayed with Manjula till her death last year. Manjula then speaks about how she tended to her sister when she stayed with her.

Majula portrays her husband, Pramod Murthy, in very high esteem. She says how he supported her during her ups and downs and stood by her. After that, she is about to leave when a voice stops her. The voice turns out to be her image, and the image asks questions about her relationship with her sister. The image insinuates that Manjula might be jealous of her sister since childhood. Her sister got all the attention since she was disabled. Her sister Malini was also more attractive, intelligent and lively than Manjula.

The image and Manjula talk about how she could not have been a successful writer if she got all the adulation which her sister received. Manjula was brought up by her grandparents, and she always missed her parents till she finally came to stay with them after her studies. When the image asks Manjula about her husband, it is revealed that her husband lived in Los Angeles, US. On being asked when exactly her husband left for the US, Manjula tells her image that it was soon after her sister died last year. This last conversation leaves a lot to be deciphered by readers as to what made her husband leave India.
