Central Board of Secondary Education

CBSE conducts its final board exam for both class 10th and 12th examinations. The Board prepares its students throughout the year with different sets of examinations that are conducted by the respective schools which also include the 10th and 12th pre-board examination or the model exams. The Private or Public schools that are affiliated with the CBSE board follow the NCERT curriculum. Students must start preparing from 6th grade as it lays down the foundation for most concepts that will be studied in detail in further grades.

CBSE works with the vision of providing “Committed To Equity And Excellence In Education.” The board has two official languages namely English and Hindi. Founded on November 3, 1962, CBSE is headed by the chairperson Mr Manoj Ahuja. The headquarters of CBSE is situated in Delhi. For more information about the CBSE and the latest updates, students can refer to the official CBSE Website. Mentioned below is all the important information that you need to know about CBSE.

CBSE Exam Pattern 2023-2024

The CBSE has released a notification detailing the Special Scheme of Assessment for the Board Examinations (Classes 10 and 12) for the 2023-24 session. This unique assessment scheme was developed in light of the COVID-19 situation, prompting CBSE schools to adopt virtual learning. For the academic year 2023-24, the board has opted to streamline the CBSE Syllabus for students in grades 10 and 12, aiming to enhance accessibility and effectiveness in the context of virtual education.

Special Assessment Scheme 2023-24 for Classes 10 and 12

For the Academic Session 2023-24, the CBSE board has implemented the following schemes for Class 10 and Class 12:

  1. Academic Session will be Divided Into Two Terms, Each Comprising Approximately 50% of the Syllabus: The syllabus for the Academic session 2023-24 will be categorized into two terms using a systematic approach that includes subject experts looking into the interrelation of concepts and topics. The Board will administer examinations based on the revised syllabus at the end of each term.

  2. The Board Exam Syllabus for 2023-24 will be Rationalized: The syllabus for the academic year 2023-24 will be rationalized in the same way as the previous academic session, and it will be announced on the official website. Schools, on the other hand, will follow the Board's curriculum and syllabus.

  3. Internal Assessment/Practical/Project Shall be Made as Applicable as Possible: To guarantee a fair distribution of marks, CBSE will make efforts to make Internal Assessment/Practical/Project work more credible and acceptable, as per the rules and Moderation Policy to be released by the Board.

  4. Internal Assessments: Internal assessments for Class 9 and Class 10 for the session 2023-24 will include 3 periodic tests, student enrichment, portfolio and practical work/ speaking and listening activities/ projects. While for Class 11 and Class 12 Internal Assessment several unit tests/ exploratory activities/ practicals/ projects will be conducted. The CBSE Board will also provide additional resources such as sample assessments, question banks, teacher training etc., for making the internal assessments reliable and valid.

  5. Terminal Examinations: The CBSE is yet to announce the dates of examinations for the session of 2023-24. Students are advised to keep an eye on the official website for any new updates on the exam dates. The Board will also conduct the exam after completion of the classes. It will also be based on the rationalized syllabus (i.e. approximately 50% of the entire syllabus). The examination will be held at the examination centers fixed by the Board.

  6. Question Pattern: Choice Questions (MCQ) will be included in the Question Paper, including case-based MCQs and assertion-reasoning type MCQs. The test will be conducted for 90 minutes and will mainly cover the rationalized syllabus. (i.e. approx. 50 % of the entire syllabus). Marks scored in the Examination will be carried forward to the final score of the students. The final exam paper will be for 2 hours and will include descriptive questions.

Other Important Features of the CBSE system:

  1. Practical Exams

CBSE puts special efforts into providing all-around learning for the students. Hence, it also takes practical exams for students of Class 1 - Class 12. All CBSE affiliated schools provide necessary laboratory equipment for students to learn the practical aspects of respective subjects and give exams. The marks from the practical exams are added to the overall final assessment.

  1. Co-Curricular Activities

Not every student is the same. Some students are academically brilliant while some others excel in other fields. This is the reason CBSE promotes several extracurricular activities centered around art, literature, craft, scouts, guide, and sports activities.  Students are encouraged to participate in these activities at various levels and are recognized for their talent.
