Summary of From the Window
This chapter describes how Omana and Radha, two best friends, were looking forward to their train voyage to Kerala.
Omana was going on a trip with her family to see her grandmother, while Radha was going on holiday with her family.
Radha's family had to cancel the vacation due to an unanticipated mishap with her, as she broke her right leg and would be unable to move for six months.
The incident disappointed the two best friends because they had a lot of plans for the next trip.
Radha's mother suddenly had a brilliant idea. She encouraged Omana to keep a journal throughout the tour, detailing each and every incident she would have. As a result, Radha will be able to read the diary once Omana returns, and she will not have to miss the train ride.
Omana kept her promise to Radha and wrote about every small thing she saw and experienced on the train ride.
Omana’s Journey (17th May)
Omana slept early on the 16th night and woke up early in the morning on the 17th. When she woke up the train was at a halt in Madgoan.
They had their morning tea there.
Omana’s father told her that they will reach Kerala via Goa.
Fields with red soil and green crops, as well as slopes covered in trees, are all green.
The air is slightly cooler and less dry than in Ahmedabad.
At the level crossing, people and commodities are transported in buses, vehicles, trucks, autorickshaws, cycles, motorcycles, scooters, and even tongas and bullock carts.
Everyone is waiting for the train to pass.
At one point in time, one train crossed our train.
I and Unni tried to count the number of carriages but we could not do so since the trains were moving very fast.

The sound of the speeding train abruptly altered - khud, khud, khud... I blinked open my eyes.
Our train was crossing a massive river on a massive bridge! I was delighted when I first looked down.
It was quite terrifying for Omana! The river below was flooded and had a few boats in it. On the riverbank, she can also see some fishermen.
There was another bridge for buses and cars next to them. I suppose crossing that bridge was more exciting to her!
Omana ascended onto the upper sleeper after breakfast to read her comics. Outside, it was bright and sunny. It became dark all of a sudden.
We have entered a tunnel," someone said. This is the only way to get past the mountain." The tunnel appeared to stretch on forever.
The train had made it through the tunnel. They were on the other side of the mountain, Omana’s Appa explained. She told me she is now having a lot of fun travelling through the tunnels.

Omana’s Journey (17th May - Afternoon)
It's now afternoon. Omana and her family had idli-vada for lunch, which they purchased at Udupi station.
The scene outside has shifted once more. They can now see a lot of coconut trees and verdant fields all over the place. The clothing of the people differs from that of Ahmedabad.
The majority of the individuals are dressed in white or cream-colored dhotis and sarees. Sunil's family will disembark at Kozhikode, which will arrive at about 6 p.m.
Omana and Sunil have swapped addresses and are planning a meeting in Ahmedabad.

It's now night-time. They started packing as well. In about three hours, the train will arrive in Kottayam.
First, they are going to Valiyamma's place that night. Later, I will board the bus that will transport them to Omana’s grandmother’s village tomorrow.

Ans: Even though the crossing is blocked, crossing the railroads is extremely risky and can be fatal. No one, in my opinion, should take that risk.

Ans: Yes, I have seen many bridges in the place I live. Due to heavy traffic, these bridges were built by the government for smooth transportation.
Q3: Have you ever been through a tunnel? How did you feel?
Ans: Yes, I have traversed a tunnel. I believed I was lost for a second as it turned absolutely dark around me and I grew terrified. But, as time passed, I understood that everything was fine.
Q4: Did you ever have coconut water? How did you find it? Discuss.
Ans: Yes, I have had coconut water and it used to taste sweet without any color. During the summer season, these coconuts will be available abundantly in my locality.
