  • This lesson covers the steps involved in growing an onion crop.

Story of Basva

  • Basva lived in Belvanika village in Karnataka, with his family.

  • Every year in July his father sows the onion crop.

  • Basva’s father uses a khunti (an iron rod) to loosen the soil.

  • So, we can see that Basva’s father is preparing the land to sow the onion seeds.

  • For preparing the land to sow any seed loosening the soil is the first step, in the traditional method a khunti is used.

  • Before sowing the seeds, the soil is prepared. 

  • To improve water and manure absorption, the soil is loosened. 

  • Loosening soil particles increase crop yields by adding humus and nutrients to the soil.


Sowing the Seeds

  • After loosening the soil, the seeds will be sown using the bullocks and Kurig.

  • It is necessary to drop the appropriate number of seeds at a consistent distance.

  • Dropping too many seeds at a place or irregular dropping of seeds will lead to a bad crop.

The Sprouts Appear

  • After 15-20 days the plants will start to sprout.

  • Along with the main crop weeds have also been grown with the main crop.

  • We need to get rid of the weeds so they don't take up all of the water and fertilizer.

Growing Plants

  • As the time crosses over, the onion sprouts will grow and become an adult plant.

  • One must take out the onions in time or else they will start rotting under the ground.


The Onion Crop

  • Once the onion is taken out the onion must be got ready for the market.

  • The dry leaves and excess soil should be removed using tools.

  • Basva’s Amma and aunty used illige as a sharped object. 

  • As the onions are ready, they are being packed in the sacks and sent to the market for sale purposes.
