  • The story is of the year 1880 when a couple in Alabama was blessed with a baby girl. She was named Helen Keller and was loved dearly.

  • Helen fell ill and the fever remained high for days, her parents grew anxious and felt even after everything they did, she might not get through this, she might not live. 

  • Helen survived the illness but came back differently, now she was deaf and blind.

  • She held onto her mother and each day grew wild, locking herself in her room, not letting anyone comb and dress her. 

  • Her parents did everything they could to assist her. They believed she is a smart girl and her mother expected her to learn throughout her life. 

  • Her parents believed a teacher could better guide her and Miss Sullivan kindly agreed to help her.

  • Miss Sullivan first taught Helen to spell doll, by making her hold a doll and then writing the spelling on her hand.

  • Helen gained enormous confidence and pride as her instructor attempted to spell out the word "doll" on her hands with her fingers, allowing her to feel the concepts and understand them. 

  • A real breakthrough happened when, she learnt the spelling of water, by putting her hand through the running water. She understood water was wet and that words truly give meaning to everything.

  • This was the birth of a new perception. She was overjoyed with her newfound knowledge and felt as though she was comfortable with the surroundings.

  • She was overjoyed that now she can know about everything she wants to through words.
