Summary of a Day with Nandu

Nandu wakes up

• Nandu woke up after the sunrise and was confused about where he was.

• He felt as if he was fenced by a forest with big grey tree trunks. But to his astonishment, it was his mother and winked at Amma.

• The forest he thought to be fenced in is nothing but the legs and trunks of his family members.

• The sun became very hot and all the elephants felt the heat. Suddenly his grandmother Nani ma made a trumpet sound. Nandu’s grandmother is the oldest person in their family.

• Nani ma started to move into the jungle. All of her family members started to follow her, even Nandu followed them to the jungle.

• Once everyone reached the jungle, all of them began to spread out. Each of them ate their favorite leaves and twigs.

• Once finished eating, the herd started to go to the river. The baby elephants loved to play in the water.

• Nandu was afraid of the water. The mother elephants used to rest on the water and mud themselves.

Fun and Games

• Nandu’s cousins were playing by pulling each other’s tails. Since nandu is still small he was afraid to play in the water as others.

• He was afraid that he may fall. Nandu’s mother gently pushed Nandu into the water after which Nandu also started to play in the water like others.

• Nandu went near his cousins, and suddenly a pile of water fell into his head. He was all wet. Later he found that his cousins poured water on his head and began to play with them.

• Before the sun sets, the elephant herd started to move back to the jungle.

• As soon as they reached the forest, Nandu was very tired and slept in between the front legs of his mother drinking her milk.
