A Big Move

• Chetandas told us about his experience of partitioning India and Pakistan in 1947 when his family had to move from Pakistan to India.

• They used to live in Dera Gazi Khan, a Place in Pakistan now.

• One day his father told them that they all have to leave the village as soon as possible as there were lots of problems around them.

• Chetandas was very upset because he has to leave his home and his village, and his friends and move away.

• Chetandas and his family together, his father, mother, younger brother, and sisters took a train to Delhi and moved on. 

• A lot of people were moving from India to Pakistan or Pakistan to India in those days.

• Due to a large number of immigrants tents and refugee camps were set up and people settled temporarily there first.

• Chetandas and his family first settled in a big tent in a refugee camp near Delhi.

A New Home

• After some days Chetandas Family was allotted land in Sohan Village.

• Together decided to build a house over there and get settled.

• They together came up and worked hard to construct the house.

• They together made a kaccha house made up of mud, husk, and cow dung.

• The roofs were made by using woods and branches of neem tree and keekar tree so that termites don’t eat up the woods.

• Most of the houses around them were made like that.

A Changing House

• Several years passed Chetandas completed his studies.

• His parents want him to marry and get settled.

• Chetandas suggested making their house stronger and better.

• People suggested they should use cement and baked bricks to make it stronger.

• They re-build their house with unbaked bricks and cement.

• They built a courtyard as well as a kitchen, they used to whitewash the walls every year.

• Chetandas got married to a girl named Suman.

• In his village people used to out in the field for the toilet but they made one in their home.

More Changes

• Time passed away Chetandas had a daughter and two sons.

• They completed their studies and upgraded their house.

• Baked bricks and cement and marbles were used to make their house stronger and more beautiful.

• Chulahs were replaced by stove gases.

Seeing New Things

• Chetandas’ younger son  Montu moved to Delhi to stay and earn.

• His son lived in a luxurious place and had renovated their old house of Sohan.

• Chetandas was curious about the high-rise buildings he saw in the city.

• Now as we look, we discussed how Chetandas life changed and what types of lifestyles he had been through and what changes he saw.

• Behind every change the main aim was to create something better than the previous one like a baked brick is stronger than an unbaked brick.

Importance of CBSE Class 4 EVS Chapter 11 Changing Times

Chapter 11 explains the experience of an elder citizen named Chetandas. His family was forced to leave their ancestral house in Pakistan and relocate to India. It was not his family only but all the families living in Pakistan had to leave everything behind to reach India and settle down.

They made houses from scratch and settled down in the designated locations given by the new government. They build houses with mud, cow dung, and branches from the trees available. It was a very hard time his family went through to survive.

This chapter explains the sustainable technique of making a house with whatever is available around. He used to like his house the best as his mother and father built it from scratch with things available in the surroundings.

Eventually, he grew older, worked and mended his house. The shape and construction of the house changed in due course of time. Hence, this story is about a changing house and its shapes changing over time.
