2. According to the NCERT textbook, why did Wahida's family move from their village, Thannamandi?

Wahida's family moved from their village because in Thannamandi, girls were not encouraged to pursue higher studies. Wahida had a dream of becoming a doctor. To support her ambition and ensure she could complete her schooling up to Class 12, her family shifted to her grandmother's house in Rajouri, which had better educational facilities.

3. What are the duties of a doctor in the Indian Navy, as explained in Chapter 26?

The NCERT chapter explains that a doctor in the Indian Navy has several important duties on a ship. These include:

  • Providing medical treatment to all officers and sailors.
  • Conducting regular medical check-ups to ensure everyone stays fit and healthy.
  • Ensuring the ship remains clean and free from garbage or rats that can cause diseases.
  • Keeping everyone prepared to handle any medical emergency that might occur at sea.

4. How should a student correctly answer the textbook question, "Would you like to join the Defence Services?"

To correctly answer this question, a student should express their personal view while connecting it to the values shown in the chapter. A good answer would be: "Yes, I would like to join the Defence Services because it is an honourable profession that allows me to serve my country. Like Wahida, I want to learn discipline, be courageous, and help keep our country safe. It is a job that fills one with pride."

5. What key points from the NCERT text should be included to describe Wahida Prism's major achievements?

For a complete answer on Wahida Prism's achievements as per the NCERT solutions, you should include the following points:

  • She became a doctor in the Indian Navy, fulfilling her childhood dream.
  • She was one of the very few women who got to serve on a naval ship.
  • She became the first woman in India to lead a passing-out parade of the armed forces.
  • During the parade, she successfully managed four platoons and gave 36 commands.

6. What are some other occupations in the Navy besides being a defence officer or a doctor?

The Indian Navy has various roles and occupations to ensure a ship or base functions smoothly. Based on the activities required, other occupations include cook, barber, musician, gardener, and teacher. Each role is essential for the community life within the defence forces.

7. Why is giving commands in a loud and clear voice essential when leading a parade?

In a parade, the commander leads several groups of people called platoons, who march together. The commands must be given in a very loud and clear voice so that every single person, even those at the back, can hear them at the exact same time. This ensures that all platoons move in perfect synchronisation and the parade looks disciplined and impressive.

8. How does the chapter explain the difference between a doctor's work in a city hospital and on a naval ship?

While a doctor in a hospital primarily treats sick people, a doctor on a naval ship has a broader role focused on preventive healthcare. As per the chapter, a naval doctor not only provides treatment but is also responsible for the overall health of the entire crew. This includes regular check-ups, maintaining hygiene on the ship to prevent diseases, and preparing for medical emergencies far from land, which is different from a typical hospital setting.

9. The chapter mentions Wahida's father gave her the name 'Prism'. How is this detail significant?

The name 'Prism' is significant because a prism is a type of glass that reflects seven different colours, showing many sides. Her father wanted her to have a unique identity and shine in many different ways, just like a prism. This detail helps us understand the encouragement she received from her family to be different and pursue her dreams, which was unusual for girls in her village.

10. How can you correctly answer the NCERT question about an unusual achievement by a woman, using a different example?

Yes, besides Wahida Prism, another example is Kiran Bedi. She was the first woman in India to become an officer in the Indian Police Service (IPS). At that time, it was very unusual for women to join such a demanding service. Her achievement showed that women could take on challenging leadership roles and inspired many others.
