Overview of Organisms and Population

This chapter falls under the Ecology branch of Biology, which is the study of the relationships of living organisms with the abiotic (Physico-chemical factors) and biotic components (other species) of their environment. Temperature, light, water, and soil are the most important physical factors to which the living organisms on earth have different behavioural responses and adapt accordingly.

Organisms maintaining a constant internal temperature contribute to optimal performance which is known as homeostasis. Some organisms called regulators who can change the internal environment can also go through homeostasis during changing the external environment. Some others can partially regulate and partially maintain a constant temperature. Other kinds of adaptation include migration or going to hibernation (during winter), or aestivation (during summer) to avoid dealing with harsh external environmental conditions.

Population ecology is an important area of ecology since natural selection occurs at the population level. Ecological effects of any factors affecting the population generally affect the population density, which is expressed in other ways depending on the species of population. Population grows by birth and immigration and declines by death and emigration. The population curve increases exponentially if resources of survival are unlimited which turns to the logistic pattern when resources become limiting.

Interaction between different types of species in a specific habitat depends on the outcome and is classified as predatory, competitive, parasitic, commensalism (one species benefits and the other remains neutral), amensalism (one species suffers and the other remains neutral), and mutualism (both species benefit). Plants have evolved diverse morphological and chemical defences against herbivores. In the environment of competition, it is presumed that the superior species eliminates the inferior ones but many closely related species have evolved to co-adapt and coexist.
