Overview of Reproductive Health

Reproductive health refers to the total well-being of humans in all aspects of reproduction, i.e., physical, emotional, behavioural and social. The primary step towards Reproductive health is to create awareness among people about Reproductive organs, adolescence and changes that are associated with it, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), safe and hygienic sexual practices, etc. through counselling and campaigns. Providing medical facilities and health care to problems like menstrual irregularities, pregnancy-related aspects as well as medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), birth control, STIs, infertility, postnatal childbirth and maternal management are some of the important aspects of the operation of the Reproductive and Child Health Care programmes by the government of India.

An overall improvement in Reproductive health through reduced infant and maternal mortality rates, early detection and cure of STIs and other such aspects under the programme along with improved health care facilities and living conditions have promoted explosive growth in the population of the country. This kind of boom in population motivated the propagation of contraceptive methods immensely. Various types of contraceptives are available now such as natural, barrier, IUDs, pills, injections, implants, and reversible and irreversible surgical procedures. By using barrier contraceptives, one can avoid getting STIs during intercourse which could otherwise have led to other health complications like stillbirth, infertility, increased susceptibility to diseases (as in the case of AIDS), etc. Medical termination of pregnancy or better known as abortion is also legalised in our country to avoid unwanted pregnancies caused due to sexual assault or other reasons such as fatality of mother or foetus or both.

Infertility arising from various reasons can be a cause of concern for couples seeking parenthood. Various methods of artificial reproduction are available for such couples, one famous and most successful method is the “in vitro” fertilisation where an ovum and a sperm taken from the respective parents are fertilized in a lab using suitable conditions followed by the transfer of the embryo to the female uterus for development and completion of pregnancy. The whole procedure is termed the “test-tube baby” programme.
