The story revolves around three characters, a Mughal emperor Akbar.
Birbal, the army’s main commander in Akbar’s court is also an advisor.
A pundit who pays a visit to Akbar’s court. pundit means a well-learned man or a scholar.
The Scholar’s Mother Tongue Revision Notes
The chapter is about a renowned scholar who was fluent in all languages.
He paid a visit to Akbar's court one day. He challenged all the courtiers in Akbar's court to tell him his mother tongue.
None in the court could tell his mother tongue as he was very fluent in speaking all languages.
Birbal then accepted the challenge. Birbal crept into the scholar's sleeping quarters late at night.
Birbal tickled his ear, and the scholar, who was fast asleep, yelled something in Telugu that flowed out his mouth like a mother tongue.
The following day, Birbal says that the scholar's mother tongue was Telugu, to which the scholar agrees.
A surprised Akbar congratulates Birbal before asking how he discovered the truth.
Birbal reasons that under tough circumstances, a person speaks in his mother tongue.
Then he recounts the full episode that occurred the night before in the pundit's bedroom.
The pundit admits defeat and departs from the king's court, distraught.
