Summary of Up You Go

  • There are a lot of problems in mountaineering.

  • The leader has to be highly responsible.

  • To stay warm and get strength, all the members of the group have to take vitamin C, hot chocolate milk, and iron with their breakfast.

  • The body of mountaineers should be at an angle of 90o and back should be straight while climbing.

  • The process of climbing down the mountain is known as rapling.

  • A tent is made by double layered plastic sheets, the air between the layers helps keep the mountaineers warm.

  • A sleeping bag is made to fill with soft feathers. It helps mountaineers to keep warm and sleep comfortably.

  • Bachhendri Pal made history being the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest.

Mountaineering Camp

  • The journey of mountaineering began on 2nd February 1984.

  • There were 20 teachers from Kendriya Vidyalaya and others were from banks and other institutions.

  • On the first day, they walked 26 kilometres.

  • The climb was steep with a narrow path.

  • Brigadier Gyan Singh was the director of the course.

  • The leader of the group is highly responsible to assist the members through the climb.


Group No. 7

  • Group No. 7 included girls from Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

  • Most of the members could not speak Hindi.

  • They were together for 21 days.

  • Khondonbi, a member of group 7, was from Mizoram.


Crossing the River

  • On the 5th February, 1984, they crossed the river.

  • To get strength, they had vitamin C, iron tablets and hot chocolate milk for breakfast.

  • There was a medical check-up done every morning.

  • They reached the river after an 8 kilometres trek.

  • A thick rope was tied across the river, from one bank to the other.

  • The river was very wide and with the help of the rope they crossed the river and reached the other side.

  • Tools needed for climbing mountains are rope, harness, ice axe, first aid kit, oxygen tank etc.


Rock Climbing

  • On 10th February, 1984 Sangeeta Arora and her group had to climb the rock.

  • To get to Tekla village, they had to hike 15 kilometres.

  • The village was 1600 metres above sea level.

  • Their rucksacks had all that they might need – food packets, water bottle, rope, hook, plastic sheet, diary, torch, towel, soap, windcheater, whistle, glucose, jaggery, chana and some other snacks.

  • Colonel Ram Singh was standing with pegs and ropes on a 90-metre-high flat rock.

  • They were instructed to first observe the rock carefully and identify where to put hands and feet.

  • The body should be kept at an angle of 90o while climbing.

  • While coming down they had to use the rope, in a special way called ‘rapling.’ 


A Funny Incident

  • It was 14th February, 1984 and Group 7 stayed back to find something to eat.

  • Later, they thought they were lost as it was getting dark and they could not see the other teams.

  • They started to whistle to send a signal to the other teams so they could find them.

  • After some time they were reunited with the group.


A Special Guest

  • The groups met with Bachhendri Pal on 15th February 1984.

  • She had come to get blessings of Brigadier Gyan Singh.

  • All of them were singing and dancing to the famous Pahadi song ‘Bedu Pako, bara masa, kafal pako chaita, meri chhaila.’


Camp in the Snow

  • It was the 18th February and they spent the night at a height of 2134 metres.

  • It was snowing the next day.

  • They had to climb 2700 metres the next day.


Last Day at Camp

  • It was 21st February, 1984, which was thier last day at camp.

  • Each group presented a programme at the end of the camp.

  • Sangeeta was given the Best Performance Award.


Alone on the Mountain Top

  • Bachhendri Pal was born and grew up in Nakuri village in the Garhwal area of Uttarakhand.

  • There were mountains in that area.

  • When she was 12 years old, she went to a picnic and climbed a 4000 metre high mountain with her friends for fun.

  • But soon it got dark and they could not come back down and they had to spend the long night on the mountain.

  • It was very cold and scary.

  • When Bachhendri grew older, she joined Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi.

  • Brigadier Gyan Singh became her guide.

  • Bachhendri excelled in her training and also started to train women in  mountaineering courses.

  • In 1984, Bachhendri was selected as a team member to climb the Mount Everest.


Snow Storm

  • It was the 15th of May when the team reached the height of 7900 metres on the Mount Everest.

  • There were 7 women in that 18 members team.

  • There was a teriible snow storm that night which had taken away all their tents.

  • Bachhendri was hurt on the head and almost buried under the snow.

  • Many of the members were also hurt and injured.

  • The ones who were not under the snow helped their team members to dig out of the snow.

  • They used snow-picls and axes to dig out of the snow.

  • After that, the rest of the team members returned to the base camp but Bachhendri went climbing ahead slowly but steadily towards the peak.

  • It was seven minutes past one o’clock in the afternoon of 23th May when Bachhendri Pal reached the peak.

  • She stepped onto the peak of 8900 metre high Mount Everest.

  • In Nepal, Mount Everest is also known as Sagarmatha.

  • There was another team member with Bachhendri, since there was no room for two people to stand on the peak, they tied themselves with rope using a hook and they were able to stand together on the peak.

  • She spent 43 minutes on the hightest peak of the world.

  • She pitched the national flag and bowed then took photographs.

  • Bachhendri Pal became the first Indian woman and the fifth woman in the world to reach the peak of Mount Everest.
