Comprehension Check

1. A camel can do without water for days together. What is the reason given in the text?

Ans: A camel can survive without water for many days because they sweat very less. Camels can resist high body temperature, they don’t need to sweat and therefore can retain the water they drink for long periods of time.

2. How do the smaller desert animals fulfill their need for water?

Ans: The smaller animals fulfilled their need for water by burrowing underground during the hot day and they come out at night to eat. Some of them eat other animals and get the water they need from the moisture in the meat. Others eat plants and seeds and get the water they need from plant juices.

3. In a desert the temperature rises during the day and falls rapidly at night. Why?

Ans: In a desert the temperature rises during the day and falls rapidly during the night because of the absence of moisture in desert lands. The moisture present in the air acts as a blanket and protects the earth’s surface from the hot rays of the sun but the moisture in air is absent in the desert. NCERT Solutions for Class 7 English An Alien Hand Chapter 3

The NCERT Solutions for Class 7 English ‘An Alien Hand’ Chapter 3,’ The Desert’ are available on Vedantu. In the chapter, ‘The Desert’, the author provides an account of the life and the ecosystem in a desert. In the first part, he tries to break a popular misconception that deserts are an endless stretch of sand and say that deserts also have a variety of people and various species of animals and plants that have adapted themselves to live in that sort of climate. He also says that although there are no frequent rains in a desert, the desert plants blossom whenever there is little rain.

In the next paragraph, he says that the desert is not always flat like we imagine, but has hills and mountains. It has an oasis In the middle, which gives some plants a better chance to grow. Sometimes, fast winds blow in deserts and transfer heaps of sand from one place to another, thus creating dunes.

The next section talks about the unique ability of camels to survive by storing water in their bodies for days. Camels, also called ‘the ship of the desert,’ can drink large amounts of water at a single time and store it for a long time. This enables them to live for days without water. Additionally, camels don’t sweat, thus saving water in their body itself without losing it in evaporation. Some desert animals keep their body cool by living in underground caves and get water from their body meat. Desert plants like cactus also have their unique ability to save water. Their thorns restrict the evaporation of water. Their roots can absorb moisture quickly from the ground. The last paragraph talks about the climate of deserts in brief. Due to the absence of a moisture cover over deserts, the desert gets heated up during the day and loses its heat at night very fast.
