Answer the Following Questions.

1. What was the author’s opinion about Mr Gessler as a bootmaker?

Ans: The author admired the quality of the boots made by Mr Gessler. The shoes made by Mr Gessler used to fit perfectly and they lasted very long. According to the author, Mr Gessler was a very respected person due to his art of bootmaking.

2. Why did the author visit the shop so infrequently?

Ans: The quality of boots made by Mr Gessler was extremely good and hence they lasted for a long time. Hence, the author didn’t feel the need to have a new pair of boots. Thus, he visited the shop infrequently.

3. What was the effect on Mr Gessler of the author’s remark about a certain pair of boots?

Ans: Once the author mentioned to Mr Gessler that a certain pair of boots he bought were creaky. Surprised by this, Mr Gessler silently looked at the author for some time. Then he asked the author to bring that pair of boots back to him so that he can check them. Mr Gessler also said that if he won’t be able to repair them, he would get that pair off the author’s bill.

4. What was Mr Gessler’s complaint against “big firms”?

Ans: His complaint against those big firms was that they don't make good quality boots. They were getting their sales due to heavy advertising that attracted the customers to buy from the big firms instead of Mr Gessler. Due to this, Mr Gessler was slowly getting out of the business and he feared being jobless soon.

5. Why did the author order so many pairs of boots? Did he really need them?

Ans: Mr Gessler made very good quality boots that used to fit perfectly and lasted for a very long time. Still, Mr Gessler was struggling to get more work because of the big firms that advertised a lot. The author felt bad when he came to know about this. He wanted to offer some financial help to Mr Gessler. Therefore, he ordered so many pairs of boots. No, the author didn’t need them.

Speaking

1. Do you think Mr Gessler was a failure as a bootmaker or as a competitive businessman? 

Ans: Mr Gessler’s boots were long-lasting and were the perfect fit for the customers. Thus, I think he was not a failure as a bootmaker. Mr Gessler was a failure as a competitive businessman as he could not invest in advertisement. He was also unable to make delivery on time. Both of these cost his customers and finally, he lost business to a bigger firm.

2. What is the significance of the title? To whom or to what does it refer?

Ans: To Mr Gessler, the quality of his product is the most significant. He worked alone to create the most high-quality boots but that took time. He lost many customers due to this but never compromised with the boot’s quality. The title thus signifies his concerns with keeping the quality of his boots intact. The title refers to the quality of the boots Mr Gessler created himself. Also, it refers to the principle of Mr Gessler of keeping up the quality of his craft at any cost.

3. Notice the way Mr Gessler speaks English. His English is influenced by his mother tongue. He speaks English with an accent. When Mr Gessler speaks, p, t, k, sound like b, d, g. Can you say these words as Mr Gessler would say them? “It comes and never stops. Does it bother me? Not at all. Ask my brother, please.”

Ans: Mr Gessler was of German descent and thus his speech had a pattern of accent seen among people from Germany. He would have spoken these lines as, “Id gomes and never sdobs. Does id bother me? Nod ad all. Asg my brother, blease.”

4. Speak to five adults in your neighbourhood. Ask them the following questions (in any language they are comfortable in). Then come back and share your findings with the class. 

i. Do they buy their provisions packed in plastic packets at a big store, or loose, from a smaller store near their house? 

Ans: I talked to five adults in my neighbourhood and found out two of them buy their provisions packed in plastic packaging from a nearby shopping mall. Three of them answered that they get their provisions from smaller grocery stores near their houses.  

ii. Where do they buy their footwear? Do they buy branded footwear, or footwear made locally? What reasons do they have for their preference?

Ans: As I talked to those five adults, in my neighbourhood I found out all of them buy their footwear from local shops. Among these five adults, only one uses locally made footwear while the other four uses branded footwear. The adults who use branded footwear think those are of better quality and are more suitable for modern style. 

iii. Do they buy ready-made clothes, or buy clothes and get their clothes stitched by a tailor? Which do they think is better?

Ans: All the five adults buy both ready-made clothes and also buy cloth and get some of their clothing stitched by a tailor. According to them, the readymade is better nowadays because of the increased tailoring charges. They also think it takes less time and there are many fashionable readymade clothing items found nowadays.

5. Look at the picture in the book, page no. 81.

Let pairs of students talk to each other about leaving the country. One student repeats Ajit’s statement. The other gives a reason for not agreeing with Ajit. The sentence openings given below should be used.

• There are some things which you can get only here, for example... 

• There are some special days I’ll miss, particularly...

Ans: The dialogue between Ajit and another student, Anisa is given below.

Ajith: I’ve decided to go abroad for higher studies.

Anisa: Have you? I don’t think I’ll ever do that. I love my country. If I leave this country, I’ll miss my friends and family the most. There are some things which you can get only here, such as tamarind pickles. There are some special days I’ll miss, particularly Durga puja. Most of all I’ll miss my home because it is where I grew up. I think it’s impossible for me to leave my country because I don’t think I will be able to leave without my family being nearby. How can you leave your own country except when you are not even facing a threat to your life, though it depends on one’s intention. I can’t leave for good because this is the place I do belong. Maybe for a couple of years, I can leave abroad but I will always return to my country.

Writing

1. Based on the following points, write a story. 

• Your aunt has gone to her mother’s house. 

• Your uncle does his cooking. 

• He is absent-minded. 

• He puts vegetables on the stove. 

• He begins to clean his bicycle outside. 

• The neighbour calls out saying something is burning. 

• Your uncle rushes to the kitchen. 

• To save vegetables, he puts some oil on them. 

• Unfortunately, it’s machine oil, not cooking oil. 

• What do you think happens to the vegetables? 

Begin like this: Last month my aunt decided to visit her parents...

Ans: Last month my aunt decided to visit her parents for a few days. My uncle decided to cook a delicious meal all by himself. He bought different vegetables from the market. He washed and cut the vegetables as he has seen my aunt do many times. Sometimes while cooking, my aunt covers the pot with a lid to lessen the cooking time. My uncle had noticed that. Thus, he put the vegetables in the frying pan with some oil and put it on the stove. Then he put a lid on it and went outside to clean his bicycle. He is an absent-minded person. Thus, he completely forgot about the pan he had put on the stove. After a while, Amal ji, who is his neighbour, called out that something was burning in the kitchen. Then my uncle recalled that he had put vegetables on the stove. He rushes into the kitchen and finds the room is filled with a charring smell. He quickly removed the lid and in order to save the vegetables he put some oil in them. But in the rush, he forgot that the oil bottle in his hand is not cooking oil. The bottle was of machine oil which he was using to clean the bicycle. As soon as the oil hit that hot pan, it flamed. My uncle got frightened and quickly opened the tap of the kitchen basin. He put the pan under the running water to douse the flame. Though the incident was quite funny, we were relieved that he was not harmed.

Chapter 5 - Quality (The Soul Of The Chapter)

The soul of the chapter all lies in Mr. Gressler and his business. The story revolves around Mr. Gressler and the author’s conversation. Mr. Gressler was a shoemaker for many years in London. The shop was not known with any sign apart from the name Gressler brothers. He used to make shoes only on orders.

Mr. Gressler was indulged in shoemaking art so deeply that oftentimes he didn’t communicate with customers much. The boots made by the Gressler brothers were of supreme quality.

The story also mentions the Hard times in Mr. Gressler’s life. He also mentioned how he was losing competition because of big firms that only indulged in heavy advertisement to lure its customers and how these big firms were losing self-respect by not providing promised quality of goods to its customers. The story further mentions how the author used to purchase boots in bulk because he found it of supreme quality.  The author on visiting the shop again found out that Mr. Gressler’s elder brother passed away and again purchased many shoes from him before leaving for abroad.

The end story was a little devastating as Mr. Gressler worked day and night to provide supreme quality products to its customers but failed to survive the competition. He died of starvation in spite of working so hard.
