Astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar’s creation “An Alien Hand” is a story that tells us the reason behind the failure of the Viking mission of Nasa to find life on Mars. This story starts with Tillo, a kid who lives with his parents and others beneath the surface of Mars. Some people living there go to work through the passage which is on the surface. Tillo is extremely anxious to find out what is behind the passage.

One day when Tillo’s father was taking a nap, the anxious kid took advantage of this situation, he quickly grabbed his father’s security card and went on to cross the metal gate but to his bad luck, the security device detected the entry of an unauthorized person and brought Tillo back home. After finding out about Tillo’s mischief his mother got very angry and frowned at him. Tillo’s father tried to make him understand the , he explained to Tillo that earlier, this planet was good for a living but a small change in the sun affected the planet a lot had made their life difficult since then. First, the birds died and then the fishes. Ever since they were living underneath the surface of the planet and to support their life, they had to put machinery on the surface. His father would watch over and repair it. Since the air is very thin up there with an extremely low temperature he needs to wear an oxygen suit to survive.

The next day Tillo’s father took him to his workplace. It seemed to be a great day for Tillo but unexpectedly there was a huge crowd at the place. All of them had gained the knowledge of the fact that two alien spacecrafts were approaching and the workers were carefully watching it on the display screen.

Soon enough one of the spacecrafts landed on the surface of the planet Mars. The President came with the announcement. His team comprised an in-charge of defense, a committee of scientists, and a social scientist. The President asked for their options. The in-charge of defense believed not to destroy the spacecraft in space but to wait and let it approach the planet. The committee of scientists believed that they don’t know the technology and the intention so they should watch passively and not reveal their existence. The social scientist agreed with the committee of scientists and explained that their plant condition hardly gives the impression of the existence of any life and therefore, they should minimize their activities further to prove it.

Soon the other plane landed on the planet. An astronaut slowly came out of the spacecraft and started collecting the soil. Tillo’s mind was not at peace, there was a red button on the control room and he was intrigued to push the button. Tillo’s father noticed his son's anxiousness to do so and he tried to stop him but he had done it. Tillo had already pressed the button but his father gently neutralized the button.

At the same time back on earth, NASA was having a press conference that the spacecraft had stopped responding, and possibly it had stopped working too, explaining in the conference NASA declared that their technicians have overcome the malfunction and their astronauts have collected soil samples. Unfortunately, the soil of Mars does not contain any trace of life.
