Summary of Class 7 English Honeycomb Chapter 1 - Three Questions

The story of the Class 7 English Honeycomb Chapter ‘Three Questions,’ as the name suggests, revolves around a king finding answers to three wise questions, which enlightened him with real-life experiences. The three questions were:

  1. What is the right time to begin something?

  2. Which people should he listen to?

  3. What is the most important thing for him to do?

The king knew if he found the answers to these three questions, he would always succeed. So, the king announced to reward a large sum of money to the person who could satisfy him with the answers. The king’s dilemma soon found its way to several wise men and counsels across the kingdom who shared their different perspectives on the matter. The king received more than one answer to each of his questions.

For the first question, some of the wise men advised the king to prepare and strictly follow a timetable, while the others felt that a timetable would not allow him to decide the right time to do something in advance and suggested the king be more observant. Some others counselled the king should not engage in pointless pleasures as it will give him enough time to do the right things. Wise men also suggested that the king should get a council of wise men to help him do things at a proper time.

Similarly, for the second question, the king received suggestions like he should follow his councillors, the priest, and the doctor; while some even mentioned the soldiers.

For the third question, some wise men said the most important thing is science and technology, while some kept religion at the highest priority. Others chose fighting.

However, all their efforts were in vain as none of them succeeded in convincing the king and no one got the reward. Finally, the king decided to approach a revered and wise hermit who lived in the forest, who the king thought would definitely enlighten him on the three questions.

So, the king donned plain clothes and walked to the hermit’s hut without his horse and bodyguards. Upon reaching, the king saw the hermit digging the ground in front of his hut. When he saw the king, the hermit greeted him and continued digging. The king asked him the three questions and requested answers, however, the hermit ignored him and kept digging. The hermit looked old and weak, so the king offered to help and started digging the ground alongside him. He went on digging till evening and after some time the king stopped and again requested answers to his three questions.

Suddenly, they both saw someone coming running toward the hermit’s hut. He was bleeding from the stomach and fainted and fell to the ground as he reached the king. The king tended to the man’s large wound in the stomach. He washed and covered it with his handkerchief, but when the blood didn’t stop flowing, the king dressed the wound until the bleeding stopped. They then laid the on the bed in the hermit’s hut.

The next morning the bleeding man asked for the king's forgiveness and revealed that he was following the king to kill him because the king had killed his brother and seized his property. He was waiting for the king to return from the hermit’s place, but one of the king’s bodyguards identified the man as the enemy and attacked him. The king, upon hearing this, not only forgave the man but also promised to return his property and to send his servants and his doctor to look after him. The man happily left.

The king then went back to the hermit before leaving as he wanted his answers. The king saw the hermit was sowing seeds in the beds that they had dug and requested him to answer his questions for the last time. The hermit finally replied that the king has already found his answers.

The hermit explained that the most important time to act is ‘now’ because it is the only time when we have the power to act. He further said that the most important person to listen to is ‘ourselves’ because at a particular moment no one knows what the future holds and it is uncertain if we would meet anyone else in the future.

Answering the king’s third question, the hermit said that the most important thing in one’s life should be to do good to others.
