कवि परिचय:

• प्रस्तुत कविता के कवि 'सोहनलाल द्विवेदी' है। 

• इनका जन्म 22 फरवरी 1906 को उत्तर प्रदेश में हुआ था। 

• इनकी रचनाओं में राष्ट्रीयता की भावना पाई जाती हैं l

• इनकी प्रमुख रचनाओं में दूधबतासा, भैरवी आदि शामिल है ।

कविता का सारांशः

•  प्रस्तुत कविता मे कवि ने एक मूर्ख राजा से जनता कि बचाव का चित्रण किया है l

• कविता के इस भाग मे कवि कहते हैं कि एक गुरु और उनका एक चेला था | दोनों के पास पैसा नही था | एक दिन दोनों कही घूमने निकल पड़ते है और चलते-चलते किसी नगर में पहुँच जाते है | उस नगर के रास्ते चमक रहे होते है । 

• तभी उन्हें एक ग्वालिन दिख जाती है । उसके सिर पर एक घड़ा था । गुरु उससे उस नगरी के बारे मे और वहाँ के राजा के बारे मे  पूछते है ।

• कविता के इस भाग मे कवि कहते हैं कि ग्वालिन उत्तर मे कहती है कि यह अंधेर नगरी है और इसका राजा मूर्ख है | वह कहती है यहाँ सब कुछ *टके सेर मिलता है । यह सुनकर गुरु घबरा जाते है और उनका मन वहाँ से चले जाने को कहता है |

           *टके सेर- बहुत कम दाम

• कविता के इस भाग मे कवि कहते हैं कि गुरु, चेले को भी वहाँ से चलने को कहते है | गुरुजी वहाँ से चले जाते है और चेला वहीं अकेला रह जाता है | 

• कवि कहते हैं कि उस मूर्ख राजा के अंधेरी नगरी में सबकुछ टके सेर ही मिलता था | और इसी बात का फायदा उठाकर चेला खूब रबड़ी मलाई खा लेता है । कवि कहते है कि  उस साल उस नगर मे खूब बारिश हुई थी | खूब बिजली चमकती थी और खूब बादल गरजते थे। 

• कवि कहते हैं कि बारिश के कारण राज्य की एक दीवार गिर गई थी । राजा तुरंत वहाँ पहुँच गया और संतरी को बुलाकर उससे दीवार गिरने का कारण पूछा | संतरी ने जवाब दिया कि दीवार कमज़ोर बनी थी इसीलिए गिर गई । इसमे उसकी कोई गलती से नहीं है । इसमें कारीगर की गलती है। 

• तभी कारीगर को फ़ौरन बुलाया गया | राजा ने कारीगर को सजा देने का आदेश दे दिया । तब कारीगर ने कहा इसमें मेरी कोई गलती नहीं है । इसमे *भिश्ती की गलती है|

*भिश्ती- ढोने का काम करने वाले 

• तब राजा ने हुक्म दिया कि भिश्ती को फ़ौरन बुलाकर उसे फाँसी पर चढ़ा दिया जाए। भिश्ती ने भी अपना बचाव किया और *मशक की गलती बताई ।

             *मशक- चमड़े की थैली बनाने वाला 

• मशक भी अपना बचाव करता है और  मंत्री की गलती बताता है।वह कहता है कि उन्होंने ही मुझे बड़े जानवर का चमड़ा दिलवाया था |

• मंत्री को बुलाकर उसे फांसी पर चढ़ाया जाता है लेकिन मंत्री बहुत दुबला पतला होता है l इसलिए राजा किसी मोटे आदमी को लाने का आदेश देता है  l

• संत्री मोटा गर्दन वाले आदमी को ढूंढने निकल पड़ता है और उसे चेला मिल जाता है lचेले को राजा के दरबार ले जाया जाता है l

• राजा उसे फांसी पर चढ़ाने का आदेश दे देता है l चेला  राजा के सामने आखिरी बार अपने गुरु से मिलने की इच्छा रखता है ।

• इसके बाद गुरु को राज दरबार बुलाया जाता है lगुरु और चेला आपस में कुछ बात करते हैं और झगड़ा शुरू कर देते हैं और दोनों ही फांसी पर चढ़ने की बात कहते हैं l

• राजा उनके झगड़े का कारण पूछता है lतब गुरु बताते हैं कि यह इस समय जो फांसी पर चढ़ेगा वह चक्रवर्ती बन जाएगा l

• राजा गुरु की बात सुनकर फांसी पर चढ़ जाते हैं और पूरी जनता खुश हो जाती है l
