1.यूं तो लोग घर छोड़ कर कहीं न कहीं जाते है, प्रदेश जाते है किंतु घर लौटते समय रूप सिंह को एक अजीब किस्म की लाज, अपनत्व और झिझक क्यों घेरने लगी?

उत्तर: ये सच है की लोग घर छोड़कर कहीं न कहीं जाते है, किंतु घर लौटते समय रूप सिंह को एक अजीब किस्म की लाज, अपनत्व और झिझक घेरने लगी थी, क्योंकि रूप सिंह पूरे ग्यारह वर्ष बाद अपने प्रदेश लौट रहा था और अगर कोई उससे पूछता की वह इतने वर्ष कहाँ था या वह अब वापिस आया ही क्यों है, उसका कोई खत भी किसी को नहीं आया तो वह क्या जवाब देगा। उसे पता ही नहीं की कौन कहाँ है। इसलिए रूप सिंह को इतने वर्ष बाद अपने प्रदेश लौटते समय एक अजीब किस्म की लाज, अपनत्व और झिझक ने घेर लिया था।

2. पत्थर की जाति से लेखक का क्या आशय है? उसके विभिन्न प्रकारों के बारे में लिखिए?

उत्तर: लेखक ने अपनी रचना में अनेक प्रकार के पत्थरों का वर्णन किया है। पत्थर की जाति से अभिप्राय पत्थर के प्रकार से है। जब रूप सिंह शेखर से हिल क्लाइंबिंग के बारे में पूछते है की आप इन पत्थरों पर कैसे चढ़ेंगे तब शेखर के उत्तर से संतुष्ट न होने के कारण रूप सिंह उसको बताते हैं की सबसे पहले समतल जगह देखना और फिर पत्थर की जाति को देखना की पत्थर किस किस्म का है, जिससे तुम उसपर अपनी पकड़ बना सको। लेखक ने पत्थरों के विभिन्न प्रकारों का वर्णन किया है। जैसे – इग्नियस,  ग्रेनाइट, मेटामारफिक, सैंड स्टोन और सिलिका आदि पत्थरों के प्रकार और जाति के बारे में बताया गया है।

3. महीप अपने बारे में बात पूछे जाने पर उसे टाल क्यों देता है?

उत्तर: जब महिप शेखर और रूप को घोड़े पर बैठाकर रास्ता पार करवाता है। लेकिन वह खुद सारा रास्ता पैदल ही तय करता है तो रूप सिंह उससे कहता है की तुम्हारे पैरों में भी दर्द हो गया होगा तुम भी थोड़ी देर घोड़े पर बैठ जाओ। तभी शेखर रूप सिंह से कहता है की इससे ये तो पूछो की ये है कौन से गाँव का? और कौन कौन है इसके परिवार में? तभी माहिप इन सन सवालों को टाल देता है, वह कहता है को आगे का रास्ता बहुत ही खराब है साहब, ऊपर से पत्थर भी गिरे हुए है। आप बातें मत कीजिए। वह ऐसा इसलिए करता है क्योंकि उन दोनों की बात सुनकर उसे इस बात का अंदाजा हो गया था की रूप सिंह उसका चाचा है। वह अपना सच अभी उन्हें बताना नहीं चाहता था।

4. बूढ़े तिरलोक को पहाड़ पर चढ़ना जैसे नौकरी के बारे में सुनकर अजीब क्यों लगा? 

उत्तर: जब रूप सिंह बूढ़े तिरलोक को यह बताता है की वह शहर में लोगों को पहाड़ में चढ़ना सिखाता है तो तिरलोक को अजीब लगता है क्योंकि उनके यहां तो यह आम बात है। उन्हें तो पहाड़ पर चढ़ना और उतरना कोई नहीं सीखता है। सभी अपने आप सिख जाते है। फिर सरकार भी उसे यह सिखाने के लिए 4000 रूपये वेतन भी देती है। यह क्या बात हुई। पहाड़ पर चढ़ना बूढ़े तिरलोक के लिए आसान काम था और उसके लिए उसे कोई वेतन भी नहीं मिलता था। वहीं दूसरी तरफ रूप सिंह उसी काम का वेतन ले रहा था। इसलिए बूढ़े तिरलोक को पहाड़ पर चढ़ने की नौकरी के बारे में सुनकर अजीब लगा।

5. रूप सिंह पहाड़ पर चढ़ने के बावजूद भूप सिंह के सामने बौना क्यों पड़ गया था?

उत्तर: रूप सिंह ने पहाड़ों पर चढ़ने के लिए प्रशिक्षण लिया हुआ था। जिसमें उसको पहाड़ पर चढ़ने के लिए अनेक उपकरणों की जरूरत होती थी। लेकिन भूप सिंह एक पहाड़ी व्यक्ति था। उसको पहाड़ पर चढ़ने और उससे उतरने के लिए किसी भी उपकरणों की जरूरत नहीं थी। वह अपने हाथों की माशपेशियों की मजबूती के सहारे ही पहाड़ पर चढ़ सकता था। इसलिए रूप सिंह पहाड़ पर चढ़ने के बावजूद भूप सिंह के सामने बौना महसूस कर रहा था।

6. शैला और भूप ने मिलकर किस तरह पहाड़ पर अपनी मेहनत से नई जिंदगी की कहानी लिखी?

उत्तर: रूप के अपने भाई भूप से यह पूछने पर की आपका यह पहाड़ों पर कैसे आना हुआ, इसपर भूप कहता है की पहाड़ के खिसकने से सब कुछ तबाह हो गया, सारे खेत, मां–बाबू सभी मलबे में दब गए। मैं ऊपर था पहाड़ पर इसलिए बच गया। फिर ऐसे ही आवारा घूमने लगा और सारा मलबा हटाने लगा। जितना कुछ मलबा हटा वहां पर खेती शुरू कर दी और एक झोपड़ी डाल दी। फिर नीचे से अपने लिए एक औरत ले आया, शैल। शैला के आने से खेती भी बढ़ गई। बर्फ खेतों में न जमे इसलिए उन्हें ढलवादार बना दिया। अब पानी की दिक्कत थी की पानी कहा से लाएं। एक दिन चढ़ गए हिमांग पर और देखा की झरना नीचे तो जा रहा है लेकिन पानी खेतों में लाने के लिए पहाड़ को काटना होगा। हम दोनों ने बहुत मेहनत की पानी को खेतों में लाने में, लेकिन आखिर में सफल हो गए। इस प्रकार भूप और शैला ने बड़ी मेहनत से पहाड़ों में अपनी जिंदगी की नई कहानी लिखी।

7. सैलानी ( शेखर और रूप सिंह) घोड़े पर चलते हुए उस लड़के महिप के रोजगार के बारे में सोच रहे थे जिसने उन्हें घोड़े पर बैठा रखा था और खुद पैदल चल रहा था। क्या आप भी बाल मजदूरों के बारे में सोचते है?

उत्तर: सैलानी घोड़े पर चलते हुए उस लड़के महिप के रोजगार में बारे में सोचते है क्योंकि वह पैदल चल रहा था और वे दोनों घोड़े पर। उस लड़के द्वारा यह काम करना सीधे सीधे बाल मजदूरी की तरफ ईशारा करता है। आज भी हम बच्चों को होटलों, ढाबों, दुकानों आदि पर काम करते हुए देखते है। ये सब काम बच्चे अपनी मजबूरी में करते हैं। बाकी सभी बच्चों की तरह वे भी पढ़ना लिखना चाहते है लेकिन अपने गृह स्थिति के कारण उन्हें अपने सपनों को तोड़ना पड़ता है। आज समाज में बहुत कम ही ऐसे लोग है जो इन बाल मजदूरों के बारे में सोचते है क्योंकि बच्चों को दुकानों पर काम करते देखना एक तरह से आम बात हो गई है। कई बार उनके बारे में सोचते हुए हम स्वयं पर ही लज्जा आती है की हम सक्षम होने के बावजूद भी उनके लिए कुछ नहीं कर पाते हैं।

8. पहाड़ों की चढ़ाई में भूप दादा का कोई जवाब नहीं। उनके चरित्र की विशेषता बताएं।

उत्तर: भूप सिंह एक मेहनती और दृढ़ निश्चय वाले इंसान है। जो मुसीबत के समय में भी अपना धैर्य नहीं खोते हैं। वह मेहनत से पहाड़ों में अपना घर बनाते है। एक पहाड़ी मनुष्य होने के कारण पहाड़ों पर चढ़ना और उतरना उन्हें बड़ी आसानी से आता है। वह एक परिश्रमी और मेहनती इंसान है। जो अपनी मिट्टी से हमेशा जुड़कर रहना जानता है। सब कुछ खत्म होने के बाद भी वह वहां से जाने की जगह वहां पर कठोर मेहनत से दोबारा जीवन शुरू करता है। ये सभी गुण उनके चरित्र की विशेषताओं की दर्शाते हैं।

9. यह कहानी पढ़कर आपके मन में पहाड़ों की स्त्रियों की स्थिति की क्या छवि आपके मन में बनती है? उस पर अपने विचार व्यक्त कीजिए।

उत्तर: ‘आरोहण’ कहानी पढ़कर हमारे मन में स्त्रियों की स्थिति की एक ही छवि बनती है की स्त्रियां इतनी मेहनती होती है की वे सभी पुरुषों के कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर चलती है। उनके सुख दुख में हमेशा उनके साथ रहती है और उनसे फिर भी कोई शिकायत नहीं करती। लेकिन उसी पुरुष से धोखा मिलने के कारण वह अपना सारा साहस और हिम्मत हार जाती है। इसका एक उदाहरण हम शैला का ले सकते हैं, की उसने है मुश्किल काम को भूप सिंह के साथ मिलकर आसान बना दिया था। उसने भी उतनी ही मेहनत की जितनी की भूप सिंह ने लेकिन फिर भी आखिर उसे अपनी जान गवानी पड़ती है और भूप दूसरी स्त्री ले आता है। वह उसके बलिदान और मेहनत को भूल जाता है। यह सिर्फ पहाड़ी स्त्रियों की नहीं बल्कि समाज में प्रत्येक स्त्री की स्थिति ऐसी ही है।
