1. What are the Laws of Thermodynamics?

Ans.  There are three laws of Thermodynamics which facilitate the flow of heat and energy.

  • First Law - The first law of thermodynamics is known as the law of conservation of energy which states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Instead, this energy can be transferred or changed from one state to another. A way of expressing this law is that change in internal energy (∆E) is given by the sum of heat (q) which flows across the surrounding or boundaries and work done (w).

  • Second Law - This law says that an isolated system always increases as they evolve toward thermal equilibrium which is the state of maximum entropy.

  • Third Law - This law states that entropy of a system approaches a constant value with the temperature reaching zero.

2. What is Thermal Equilibrium?

Ans. The condition in which two substances in physical contact change or transfer no heat, is called Thermal equilibrium. Here two substances are stated to be at the same temperature in thermal equilibrium.

When the gas from a plucker tube passes through an electric discharge, there should not be any doubt whether the partition of energy is different from thermal equilibrium. 

The staggered heating cycle was invented to deal with the change in thermal equilibrium. In contrast, the thermal equilibrium between vapour and liquid was made by Lord Kevin and afterwards Thomson.

3. What are the Critical Topics in Thermodynamics?

Ans. Almost all topics from Thermodynamics are crucial for the exam. The issues you can focus on are:

  1. Thermal equilibrium.
