Slowly as Helen started to grow, she turned wild and rude, not allowing anyone to dress her up or to comb her hair. She was always seen as angry and wore dirty clothes. She would also throw a tantrum like lying on the floor and kicking. The parents were tired and started their hunt for a teacher who could teach Helen. It was then that they came across Miss Sullivan.

Miss Sullivan was a strict but kind teacher. She gave Helen a doll and spelt the word as D-O-L-L using Helen's fingers. However, Helen did not understand a word of it or what the teacher wanted to convey. The teacher made special signs with her and tried to explain the word and the spelling to Helen, but it was of no use.
