FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Why is the Poet Referring to his Mother as Punctured Tires of a Vehicle?

Ans. The poet compares his mother to the punctured tyres of a bus on a pilgrimage, that had to stop before it was intended to. In the poem, human life is compared to a pilgrimage, a journey with a spiritual rendezvous, for a meeting with god after death. His mother is worn out and tired of this life and like a punctured tyre, cannot lead this vehicle at the right pace as it is required. Her life has come to a static situation, in the words of the poet, it has come to a halt before it was supposed to stop.

2. Describe the Poet’s Father’s Character as Portrayed in the Poem.

Ans. The poet’s father is compared to a metal poker made from a furnace, which is now cold. These lines indicate that he had grappled with the uncertainties of life, at an earlier age, just like a poker which is shaped by a smith by subjecting to extreme conditions so that it can be utilized in the future and do the job of stirring a fire. It wouldn’t crumble or melt again when it is put to use. So now, he is a tough person, helping the poet lead the family the right way. He is a figure of strength in the family.
