FAQs on HC Verma Solutions Class 12 Chapter 33 - Thermal and Chemical Effects of Current

1. What is electroplating? Give an example of electroplating.

Electroplating is a method of coating a layer of one metal with another metal by electrolysis.

The example of Gold Electroplating Process for a Silver Spoon:

  • To electroplate the silver spoon with gold, we use an acidified solution of the metal to be coated (gold chloride with hydrochloric acid) as an electrolyte and the electroplated product (silver spoon) as a cathode.

  • Then, to be deposited as an anode, take a thick plate of the metal (gold plate).

  • The silver spoon should now be cleaned with a dilute acid solution to remove the oxide layer from its surface, followed by thorough washing in running water to remove the acid.

  • As a result, the cleaned silver spoon is suspended in a beaker of acidified gold chloride solution (electrolyte).

  • Also floating in the gold chloride solution is a thick gold plate (chosen as an anode).

  • A battery and a key are then used to complete the circuit.

  • Remove the electrodes from the solution after allowing the current to run through for around 15 minutes.

  • As a result, the silver spoon will appear to be gold.

2. What is the chemical effect of electric current on water?

When the electrodes are submerged in water and electricity is conducted through the water, bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen emerge, according to William Nicholson, a British chemist. He noted that hydrogen bubbles formed on the electrode attached to the negative terminal and oxygen bubbles formed on the electrode connected to the positive terminal. When an electric current travels through a conducting fluid, chemical reactions occur. The chemical action of electric current is what it's termed.

Some chemical effects of electric current are-

  • Gas At the electrodes, bubbles developed.

  • On electrodes, metals are deposited.

  • The color of the solution changes.

When various compounds are mixed in water and electricity is delivered through them, the positive and negative particles of water ions can break apart. As a result, the electric current passes through these ions. The greater the conductor of electricity, the more ions are in the liquid. As a result, distilled water is a poor conductor of electricity, but saltwater is an excellent conductor. Many substances, such as oil, sugar water, and alcohol, do not produce ions when mixed with water and hence are poor conductors of electricity.

3. How is electric current affected by thermal reaction?

The following are some of the thermal effects of electric current.

Let's take a closer look at electricity, as well as its heating and chemical impacts.

  • Heating Effect- The electrical equipment is heated by the electric current. The filament in a bulb, for example, is heated by the electric current and glows as a result.

  • Mechanical Effect - In appliances, electric current can cause mechanical energy to be generated. This effect, for example, is responsible for the operation of motors and fans.

  • Electric current- It can elevate into a substance's magnetic field, which is a well-known chemical action of electricity.

  • Chemical Effect - electric current can cause chemical reactions or chemical energy to be produced.

4. What occurs when an electric current passes through a conducting solution?

When an electric current travels through a conducting fluid, chemical reactions occur. Gas bubbles may occur on the electrodes as a result. On electrodes, metal deposits can be seen. The color of the solution may change. What solution and electrodes are used will determine the reaction.

The contents break down into negative and positive ions when electricity is passed through water combined with various compounds. An electric current flows via these ions. The greater the conductor of electricity, the more ions there are.
