About KVPY


Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana(KVPY) is a scholarship program examination, conducted by Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This fellowship program was initiated by The Department of Science and Technology (DST) in the year 1999. Main aim of the program is to identify and encourage the talented students in pursuing their career in the field of research. This program motivates the students in realizing their potential at national level. KVPY exam ensures that the best talent is groomed for research and development in India. The selected students for KVPY scholarship get an unmatched exposure to watch scientists work in a scientific environment. They get many opportunities to interact with them and thereby implement the ideas in their research assignments .

Depending upon the grade candidate is enrolled in, KVPY Online Exam 2018-19 is divided into three streams :

a. Stream SA - Students enrolled in Grade 11 for Academic year 2018-19

b. Stream SX - Students enrolled in 12th grade for academic year 2018-2019

c. Stream SB - Students enrolled in the 1st year of an undergraduate program of Basic Science ( B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math / M.Sc. / M.S. in Chemistry , Physics , Mathematics , Statistics , Biochemistry , Microbiology , Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Material Science, Environmental Science ) for present academic year.

Eligibility

Only an Indian National student is eligible to apply for KVPY fellowship as scholarship is given to study in India. There are separate eligibility criteria for KVPY fellowship for SA, SX and SB streams. These criteria are as follows :

Stream SA:

  • • They should have scored a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/ PWD) marks in aggregate for Maths and Science in Class 10th Board exam .

  • • Fellowship of students belonging to this stream is activated only when they join an undergraduate course in Basic Science ( B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math / M.Sc. / M.S. in Chemistry , Physics , Mathematics , Statistics , Biochemistry , Microbiology , Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Material Science, Environmental Science )for 2020-21, after securing a minimum of 60% ( 50% for SC/ST/ PWD) marks in aggregate for Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in 12th board examination

  • Stream SX:

  • • Candidates should secure a minimum of 60% ( 50% for SC/ST/ PWD) in 12th grade and a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/ PWD) marks in aggregate for Maths and Science for Class 10th grade Board exam.

  • • Those belonging to this stream need to pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Science ( B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math / M.Sc. / M.S. in Chemistry , Physics , Mathematics , Statistics , Biochemistry , Microbiology , Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Material Science, Environmental Science ) for the academic year 2020-2021

  • Stream SB:

  • • Students enrolled in 1st year of an undergraduate program in Basic Science ( B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math / M.Sc. / M.S. in Chemistry , Physics , Mathematics , Statistics , Biochemistry, Microbiology , Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Material Science, Environmental Science )for the academic year 2018-19, can take the test.

  • • Candidates need to have scored 60% ( 50% for SC/ST/ PWD) marks in aggregate for Science subjects ( Physics, Chemistry, Biology) in 12th grade.

  • • In addition to this, candidates need to secure 60% ( 50% for SC/ST/ PWD), in the 1st year final exam, before they take fellowship.

  • Selection procedure:

    KVPY exam takes place in two stages. The first stage is Aptitude Test with two time slots. Stream SA has the morning slot, while Streams SB/SX fall in the afternoon Only those students who clear the first stage, can make it to the second. The two stages of KVPY fellowship exams are discussed below:

    Stage I – Aptitude Test

    This is an Online test (multiple choice) with negative marking for every wrong answer. The Aptitude Test is conducted in Hindi and English at different centres across the country. There are 80 questions for SA stream. Number of questions for SB and SX streams are 120. For Part I, every right answer fetches 1 mark. In Part II, Each correct answer adds 2 marks. In addition to this, there is a deduction of 1/4 of the mark, for every wrong answer in Part I and 1/2 for the same, in Part II. Duration for this exam would be 3 hours.

    The time slots for KVPY Exam, across three streams are :

    Stream SA : 09:00 AM – 12:30 PM
    Stream SB/SX : 02:00 PM – 05:00 PM

    Stage II – Interview

    This is the second and last stage for getting shortlisted. Interview carries 25% weightage as against Aptitude Test carrying 75% of the weightage, for getting selected. This stage has many uncertain factors attached to it, to make the candidate nervous.

    Guidelines for aspiring candidates are:

  • • Candidates should always adhere to explaining on a whiteboard with a pen, as compared to verbal explanation. This would make the candidate less nervous.

  • • Language is not a barrier in KVPY interview, and selection depends upon knowledge about the subject.

  • • Calmness at the time of interview and showing your enthusiasm to learn new concepts are very important for the 2nd stage of selection.

  • • Use diagrams to support your answers, whenever possible.

  • Selected KVPY students get the benefit of KVPY Scholarship, up to pre Ph.D. level or 5 years (whichever is earlier).

    Filling KVPY application form:

    The online application form involves entering personal details, academic details uploading of photograph, signature and other documents, payment of fees and final submission.
    Candidates must check their eligibility criteria for various streams offered by KVPY. Before applying, candidates should have a soft copy of his/her recent passport size photograph. There should be absolutely no mistake while filling the details. Once the application form is submitted, no changes are entertained.
    Once the application form is filled, student should quickly proceed to payment option. Mode of payment can be Credit Card/ Debit Card or Net banking.

    For General Category : 1000 (Bank Charges extra)
    For SC/SD/PWD : 500 (Bank Charges extra)
    Candidates may note down the transaction details. After a successful payment is made, there is no refund of application fee. It's a must for the candidates to keep a valid email id and mobile number active till the results are declared, for notifications

  • Examination Centre :

    While completing registration process, candidates have an option to select the preferred city. Accordingly, an examination centre would be allotted to you. Carrying the original admit card and photo copy of the same, is a must for the candidates. Its mandatory to read the instructions very carefully. Electrical items/ gadgets and study materials are strictly prohibited. If the candidate is found violating the rules, there would be an immediate cancellation of candidature.
