Important Terms Covered:

Some of the key terms are given below that you will learn through Class 8 Geography are given below:

Resource

'Resource' refers to everything in our environment that may be exploited to meet our requirements and is technologically accessible, economically practical, and culturally acceptable. Human people are necessary components of resources. They convert materials found in the environment into resources and utilize them.

Resource Classification

The following types of resources can be classified:

  • Based on origin – biotic and abiotic

  • Based on exhaustibility – renewable and non-renewable resources

  • Ownership – individual, communal, national, and worldwide

  • On the basis of development state – potential developed stock and reserves

Resource Development

Humans have exploited resources indiscriminately, which has resulted in the following main issues.

  • Depletion of resources to satisfy the avarice of a few people.

  • The concentration of resources in a few hands, which in turn split society into two halves, wealthy and poor.

  • It has resulted in worldwide environmental issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, pollution, and land degradation.

Resource planning is critical for the long-term survival of all kinds of life. Sustainable Economic Growth indicates that "progress should take place without harming the environment, and development in the present should not jeopardize future generations' needs." There are certain locations in India that may be termed self-sufficient in terms of resource availability, and there are some regions that suffer a severe scarcity of some key resources. This necessitates resource planning that is balanced at the national, state, regional, and local levels.

India's Resource Planning

Resource planning is a complicated procedure that entails:

  • Identification and inventory of resources across the country's regions. Surveying, mapping, qualitative and quantitative evaluation and measurement of resources are all part of the process.

  • Developing a planning framework that is equipped with the necessary technology, skills, and institutional infrastructure to carry out resource development plans.

  • Aligning resource development strategies with long-term national development goals.

Soil Erosion

Soil erosion is defined as the denudation of the soil cover and subsequent washing away. Soil erosion is caused by human activities such as deforestation, overgrazing, building, and mining, among others. In addition, natural factors such as wind, glaciers, and water contribute to soil erosion. Soil erosion can also be caused by poor farming practices. Running water cuts through the clayey soils, forming deep channels known as gullies. The land becomes unsuitable for agriculture and is referred to as bad land. Sheet erosion occurs when water runs in a sheet across a vast region of a slope and washes away the topsoil. Wind erosion occurs when the wind sweeps loose dirt off the flat or sloping ground. And hence, it is very crucial that drastic steps are taken in order to counter this imminent threat of excessive soil erosion.
