International Men's Day

International Mens Day (IMD) is a global festival commemorating and celebrating men's cultural, political, and social achievements. International Men’s day date is on November 19th. 'All The Six Pillars of International Men's Day' lays forth the goals of dedicating a day to celebrate International Men's Day. It is a time to recognize and honour the achievements and contributions of boys and men, particularly in our nation, unions, societies, communities, family, and marriage. The event's overarching goal is to promote basic humanitarian ideals and raise awareness about men's challenges.

The project of International Men's Day was created one year earlier on February 8, 1991, and was inaugurated by Thomas Oaster on February 7, 1992. In Trinidad & Tobago, the project was restarted in 1999. Malta hosts the longest-running International Men's Day celebrations, which began on February 7, 1994. Because Malta was the only country that celebrated Men and their contributions to society on February 14th, the Maltese AMR Committee resolved in 2009 to move IMD to November 19th.

International Men's Day in India

On November 19, 2007, the main Indian men's rights organization Indian Family hosted the inaugural celebration of IMD in India.  The date of November 19 was chosen because Australia and the West Indies were already participating in IMD on that day. In 2008, the incident was commemorated once more in India to continue the commemoration annually.

With menswear brand Allen Solly deciding to create promotional deals on IMD and HBO deciding to play male-positive movies in its "Men in Black" series on November 19, 2009, India acquired the first corporate sponsorship of the men’s International Day. Confidare Education Consultancy staged an International Men's Day art gallery in New Delhi in 2014, while protests were held in Kolkata to raise awareness about men's rights and elder abuse. On the occasion of IMD, several men's rights activists raised concerns about the lack of gender neutrality in-laws concerning domestic abuse and child custody. On IMD 2014, the Chennai branch of the All India Men's Welfare Association (AIMWA) submitted a memorandum to the government, requesting the creation of a Men's Welfare Ministry, a National Commission for Men, and the gender neutralization of all laws.

Avijan, a men's welfare and charitable trust, staged a protest in Kolkata in 2018 to demand gender neutrality in the law, the establishment of a men's commission in India, the repeal of Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, and forceful action against rape law abuse.

Every year, Save Indian Family – Karnataka (SIF Karnataka), a Save Indian Family Movement-affiliated NGO advocating for men's rights in India, commemorates International Men's Day. It sponsored a #HealthyHim campaign on prostate cancer awareness in 2019 in collaboration with two major Bangalore hospitals, Aster Hospitals, and Regal Hospital. In 2017 and 2018, the volunteers planned a bike rally to Nandi Hills, India, and celebrated International Men's Day with almost 40,000 people in attendance, among many other awareness initiatives.

Every year, the Daaman Welfare Society & Trust, another significant NGO operating under the Save Indian Family Movement, commemorates International Men's Day. In 2019, it held a one-day major event at Kanpur's Rave 3 Mall to raise awareness about International Mens Day. It was also considered the need for a National Men's Commission.

How to Observe International Men's Day?

Over 80 countries, including Jamaica, India, the United States, the Cayman Islands, Norway, and Pakistan, commemorate this day. Sports tournaments, health fairs, prayer sessions, panel discussions on men's issues, concerts, fundraisers, and tributes to male role figures are just some of the events held.

To be a part of it: 

• Encourage males to take up leadership roles in their families and communities.

• Thank a man who has aided you in achieving your objectives.

• Look for positive male role models for your sons.

• Sully, The Great Escape, and Captain America: The First Avenger are all films that portray males in a favorable light.

• Discover historical figures such as Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

• Volunteer for a cause that will have a beneficial impact on a young boy's life.

• Donate to a non-profit that works to improve the lives of young men.

International Men's Day Activities

• Donate to a Men's Charity: There are numerous organizations committed to assisting guys in living better lives. The Gay Men's Health Crisis works to prevent HIV/AIDS from spreading and to help HIV-positive people improve their health and independence. (Despite its name, it also helps heterosexual males.). The Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation promotes testicular cancer awareness and emphasizes the significance of regular self-examination. The ManKind Initiative, meanwhile, is committed to assisting males in escaping and recovering from domestic violence and abuse.

Consider reading a book or seeing a film about a remarkable man whose life and achievements continue to have an impact on the world today. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the second man in history (and the first black man) to perform a successful open-heart surgery, is the subject of The Black American Experience. Alan Turing, the man who invented modern computing and helped end World War Two, is the subject of The Imitation Game, a compelling and dramatic depiction.

• Examine Your Relationships with the Guys in Your Life: Building great relationships with men is a big objective, but it all started small. Check in with your male relatives and friends to see how they're getting along. Half the battle is won if we're content at home. By wishing happy men’s day to your men.

Why Do We Celebrate International Men's Day?

• It's a Day to Honor All Men: The popular adage that "every day is International Men's Day" may be true in some cases, but the fact remains that not all men are commemorated equally. International Men's Day serves as a reminder that men come in all shapes and sizes, and they all deserve to be heard.

• It's a Day Dedicated to Assisting Others: Men are under a lot of social pressure, for example, to be providers and to avoid asking for help or expressing their emotions. The goal of International Men's Day is to confront these issues and redefine masculinity.

• It All Comes Down to Gender Equality: Gender equality is a good objective to aim towards, and International Men's Day serves as a reminder to make a special effort to foster strong relationships across the gender spectrum.

National Men’s Day

19th November is considered as national men’s day, men all across the world may teach the values, character, and responsibilities of being a man to the boys in their life. Male role models are encouraged to give an example of health, well-being, and integrity for young men on this day.

The  essential components of Men’s day include : 

• One should focus on health.

• Promote gender equality.

• Male role models should be highlighted.

• Honor accomplishments and contributions.

• Basic humanitarian ideals should be promoted.

Men who lead by example contribute to the creation of a just and safe society. Everyone benefits as a result of their beneficial deeds.

Men commemorating International Men's Day should consider how they may favorably impact their sons and how they can positively inspire other boys. Boys without a father or without a male role model to help them through life fall into this category.

Men are Diverse

Men, like women, come in a variety of shapes and sizes. While the notion of the buccaneering cowboy may continue in some minds, most of us can tell by a glance at social media that we now span the entire spectrum, from super alpha to super beta, and all degrees in between and around. Indeed, gender fluidity is challenging the basic notion of binary gender distinctions and what it means to be a man.

Men are still imprisoned by stereotype danger on one extreme of the spectrum. Some people refer to conforming to society's view of what a guy should be as toxic masculinity. In some cases, this is counterproductive since it perpetuates the link between toxicity and those male characteristics that aren't poisonous. The idea is that identity is derived from an extreme manifestation of perceived masculine characteristics ranging from defensiveness to aggression.
