IIT Kharagpur - Introduction

One of the best engineering institutes in our country is the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. It was founded in 1951, and this institute is still considered as the oldest and best institution to impart quality education to its students in several disciplines. IIT Kharagpur is spread across an area of 2100 acres and is well-equipped to accommodate approximately 22,000 people. It includes 8 multidisciplinary centres/ schools, 19 academic departments, 13 schools of excellence, and 25+ central research and development units.


The history of IIT Kharagpur is seen in the old Hijli Detention Camp, where some of our freedom fighters sacrificed their lives to achieve our country's independence. So, it is linked with the Hijli Detention camp.  It started With 224 freshers, 42 teachers and 10 departments, and the Institute began its academic journey in August 1951.


Presently, with its 40 academic units, 11500 students, and 650 faculty members, this institution helps teach students to dream about the scope of technology to impact the world.

IIT Kharagpur Admission Process

The framework of IIT Kharagpur is well built throughout the country. It offers diverse courses across the technology to the children studying there. With such diversity, the students develop holistic knowledge around your discipline, which helps them stand out in the future. So,  the university attracts high-calibre students in their programmes.


Admission in IIT Kharagpur is enabled through your rank/score in various entrances. It consists of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for undergraduates. IIT Kharagpur  also provides scholarships to students using Free-Messing and Merit-cum-means Scholarship.


The admission process initiated in September for undergraduates. The counselling process for admission to all IITs is facilitated by Joint Seat Allocation Authority. The candidate is allotted a seat in the course through his JEE ADVANCED RANK and preference of the courses is allotted through the JEE ADVANCED RANK.


There are six counselling sessions for the candidates. The eligibility criteria of almost all the courses include:

  1. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/ Biology as the major subjects.

  2. Minimum of 50-60% of marks in Class 12 to appear for admission. 

  3. SC/ ST will have the relaxation of up to 5% in the minimum qualifying marks.

  4. Cut-off of the particular course.

  5. Cut-off score of TOEFL and IELTS for admission of expat students from other

1) TOEFL score of at least 80 out of 120.

2) IELTS score of at least 6.5 out of 9.0.

Application Process

The students are required to complete entire admission applications to apply to IIT Kharagpur. It takes place through the online portal on the official website. The student should register for JEE Advanced exam for B.Tech and AAT Exam for B.Arch program. The candidate should upload all the personal, academic details and upload Scanned Images of Candidate’s Photograph and Signature through the official website. The students will then have to pay an application fee using Debit card/Credit card/Net banking/UPI/PAYTM by following the online instructions. Once the payment is successful, print the acknowledgement slip for future reference.

IIT Kharagpur Application Step-Wise Procedure:

  1. Apply for the official application portal of IIT Kharagpur.

  2. Select the desired course.

  3. Choose “Apply Online” tab.

  4. Enter as a new user and fill the important details.

  5. Log in with your user name and fill all your details in the application form.

  6. Mention your academic qualifications.

  7. Submit the application form after paying the fees. 

Following is the list of documents that needs to be submitted along with the application form:

  1. Scanned copies of colored photograph & date of birth certificate.

  2. Certificates of Caste and category certificate (if applicable).

  3. Scanned copies of educational certificate and qualifying mark sheet.

  4. Scanned copies of the entrance examination scorecard.

Cut Off

The admission process is facilitated by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) in which the university provides the cutoff, and JoSAA claims the merit list after each round. The IIT Kharagpur cutoff is published in the form of Opening and Closing Ranks after completing their counselling rounds. It is categorised based on the gender and category.

Scholarships

IIT Kharagpur offers financial support to as many students as possible in the form of scholarships. These scholarships in the form of merit-cum-means scholarship and endowment scholarships. The former one will be given to not more than 25% of the students admitted each year to the Undergraduate and Dual Degree courses of IIT Kharagpur, and the latter one is given by scholarship fund schemes like B.P Poddar Scholarship, KK Aggarwal scholarship etc. IIT Kharagpur offers almost 32 endowment scholarships like that. There are some alumni-funded scholarships also.
