The admission process begins in September for undergraduates and March for Postgraduate programmes. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority regulates the counselling process for admission to all IITs. The candidate is allotted a seat through his JEE Advanced Rank and preference of the courses. There are six counselling sessions for the candidates. The eligibility criteria of almost all the courses include

  1. 10+2, with Physics and Mathematics as main subjects.

  2. Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology as additional subjects.

  3. Above 75% marks in 12th Board, 65% for Scheduled caste and tribes.

  4. With the cut-off of the particular course.

Scholarship 1 (Merit-cum-Means scholarship)

Scholarships are provided on the basis of merit to a maximum of 25% of the sanctioned undergraduate intake. For the  Dual Degree students, the scholarship is available only till the 4th year. Both academic merit and financial need will be considered in determining the eligibility for these scholarships. Women Merit Scholarships are available only to female undergraduate students.

Scholarship 2 -  National Scholarships (All States)

The eligible students are also awarded the National Scholarships from the respective states. The applications for all the national scholarships are always forwarded through IIT Bombay. The students need to submit their progress reports at the beginning of every academic year to renew their scholarships.


These scholarships are well-designed to cover a candidate’s annual tuition and mess expenses at IIT Bombay. Except for the pooled scholarship, the Donor may state the name of the scholarship.

1. What Research Opportunities are available for undergraduate students at IIT Bombay?

There is a girls' hostel at IIT Bombay considering the privacy of the girls. But the students cannot avail of the benefits of hostel accommodation for free. They have to pay the charges. They have to pay the initial 2000 rupees as the refundable amount and additional 14000 rupees that includes the charges for hostel accommodation for each of the semesters.

4. How can I get admission to IIT Bombay?

The students who want to pursue undergraduate degrees from IIT Bombay, have to qualify for the examinations like JEE. But the students who want to pursue their higher academic careers like the degrees in one of the fields of studies as per their preference or they want to pursue post-graduation degrees, they have to qualify for other examinations as well to get admission at IIT Bombay. For example, the students who want to pursue post-graduate degrees have to qualify for GATE, which is designed to evaluate the aptitude of the potential engineering students. If the students want to pursue M.Phil, M. Sc or other high academic degrees they have to qualify for Common Entrance Examination for Design also known as CEED.

5. Is there any State Quota or Ward of Defence Personnel?

According to the reservation criteria of JEE Main, there is no state quota available for the candidates. The only reservation that is available when it comes to getting admission at IIT Bombay is for the students who belong to SC, ST, or OBC communities. 15% of the total seats are reserved for the students who belong to the SC category. 7.5% of seats are reserved for the ST category students and 27% of the total seats are reserved for the students who belong to other backward communities. Under some conditions, the students belonging to the SC or ST community can get a 50% relaxation. It only happens when most of the candidates fail to cater to the minimum qualifying criteria to get admission at IIT Bombay. There is also no reservation available for Ward of Defense personnel.
