FAQs on JEE Advanced Marks vs Rank 2026: Category-wise AIR, Qualifying Cutoff, IIT Branch Predictor & Year-wise Trends

1. What are the qualifying marks for JEE Advanced 2026?

To be included in the JEE Advanced 2026 rank list, candidates must meet two criteria simultaneously — minimum marks in each individual subject (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) AND minimum aggregate marks across both papers combined.

The official qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2026 will be released by IIT Roorkee along with the results on June 1, 2026, at jeeadv.ac.in. Based on previous year trends and expert analysis, the expected qualifying marks for JEE Advanced 2026 are as follows:

Category

Min. Marks in Each Subject (out of 120)

Min. Aggregate Marks (out of 360)

General (CRL)

~10% per subject (~12 marks)

~35% aggregate (~90–105 marks)

OBC-NCL / GEN-EWS

~9% per subject (~11 marks)

~31.5% aggregate (~83–95 marks)

SC / ST / PwD

~5% per subject (~6 marks)

~17.5% aggregate (~46–55 marks)

Preparatory Course

~2.5% per subject (~3 marks)

~8.75% aggregate (~23–28 marks)

Important: Meeting the qualifying cutoff only makes a candidate eligible for the rank list. It does not guarantee an IIT seat. Admission to IITs depends on the candidate's All India Rank (AIR) and seat allotment through JoSAA counselling 2026, where significantly higher scores are required for top IIT branches.

2. What are the total marks of JEE Advanced 2026?

The total marks of JEE Advanced 2026 are 360 marks, divided equally across two compulsory papers.

All ranks and cutoffs are based on Paper 1 + Paper 2 combined

Each subject carries a maximum of 120 marks across both papers (60 marks per subject per paper). The final JEE Advanced rank is determined based on the combined aggregate of Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are compulsory — candidates who do not appear for both papers are not eligible for the rank list.

3. What is the difficulty level of JEE Advanced 2026?

JEE Advanced 2026 was conducted by IIT Roorkee on May 17, 2026, and was rated Moderate to Difficult overall by students and expert faculty. The paper was designed to test deep conceptual understanding, multi-step problem solving, and analytical ability — consistent with JEE Advanced's reputation of being one of the toughest engineering entrance exams in the world.

Paper

Subject

Difficulty Level

Key Observation

Paper 1

Mathematics

Difficult

Toughest section of Paper 1 — lengthy, calculation-heavy; Functions and Indefinite Integrals were particularly hard

Paper 1

Physics

Moderate

Multi-concept questions; Modern Physics, Electrostatics, Error Analysis tested strongly

Paper 1

Chemistry

Moderate

Most approachable section; NCERT-aligned; acted as score booster

Paper 2

Physics

Moderate to Difficult

Toughest section of Paper 2 — wordy Electrodynamics and Mechanics questions drained time

Paper 2

Mathematics

Moderate to Difficult

Lengthy; Vectors, 3D Geometry, Definite Integration dominated

Paper 2

Chemistry

Moderate

Balanced; Organic mechanisms, Coordination Compounds, Physical Chemistry

Overall Difficulty Order — Paper 1: Mathematics ≥ Physics > Chemistry

Overall Difficulty Order — Paper 2: Physics > Mathematics > Chemistry

Paper 2 was rated slightly harder than Paper 1. Students who managed time well — attempting Chemistry first, then Physics, then Mathematics — generally performed better. The paper prioritised analytical thinking over direct formula application, which is a consistent JEE Advanced trend in recent years.

4. What rank at 70 marks in JEE Advanced?

A score of 70 marks out of 360 in JEE Advanced 2026 is below the expected qualifying cutoff for the General (CRL) category, which is approximately 90–105 marks. Therefore, a General category candidate scoring 70 marks will NOT receive a CRL rank and will not be eligible for JoSAA counselling for IIT admission through the General rank list.

However, for reserved category candidates:

  • SC and ST candidates: A score of 70 marks is above the expected SC/ST qualifying cutoff of ~37 marks. SC/ST candidates scoring 70 marks may receive an SC or ST category rank and could be eligible for JoSAA counselling for reserved category IIT seats, though options will be limited to newer IITs in less competitive branches.

  • OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS candidates: A score of 70 marks is below the expected qualifying cutoff of ~66 marks for OBC-NCL/EWS. Such candidates are unlikely to receive a category rank.

For reference, based on official IIT Kanpur 2025 data (the most recent available):

  • 74 marks = AIR 33,859 (last CRL rank in 2025) — meaning 70 marks would not qualify for CRL in 2025 either.

  • 70 marks in the General category typically places a candidate beyond rank 35,000–40,000 — outside the rank list entirely.

Note: The official qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2026 will be released by IIT Roorkee on June 1, 2026. The above figures are estimates based on 2025 official data and current exam difficulty analysis.

Note: Merely clearing the qualifying cutoff does not guarantee an IIT seat. Actual admission depends on AIR and JoSAA choice filling. Official JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff will be available at jeeadv.ac.in on June 1, 2026.

9. What is the marking scheme of JEE Advanced 2026?

JEE Advanced 2026 followed the traditional multi-type marking scheme with different rules for each question type. The marking scheme varied across sections within each paper — candidates had to read section-specific instructions carefully before attempting.

Question Type

Description

Correct Answer

Wrong Answer

Unattempted

Single Correct MCQ

One correct option out of four choices

+3 marks

-1 mark (negative marking)

0 marks

Multiple Correct MCQ (Full marks)

One or more correct options; all correct options must be selected

+4 marks

-2 marks (if any wrong option selected)

0 marks

Multiple Correct MCQ (Partial)

Partial credit for partially correct answers

Partial marks (up to +4)

Negative for wrong options

0 marks

Numerical Value Type

Integer or decimal answer typed in; no options given

+4 marks

0 marks (no negative marking)

0 marks

Matrix Match Type

Match items from List I to List II

Partial/full marks based on correct matches

Negative marking applies

0 marks

Key strategy notes from Vedantu experts:

  • Numerical Value Type questions carry NO negative marking — always attempt these, even when partially uncertain, as there is no penalty for wrong answers

  • Multiple Correct MCQs carry the highest risk — selecting even one wrong option results in negative marking. Attempt only when confident about all correct options

  • Single Correct MCQs follow a straightforward +3/-1 scheme — skip if completely unsure to avoid losing marks

  • Paper 1 had 48 questions total (16 per subject); Paper 2 had 54 questions (18 per subject)

  • Both papers carry 180 marks each — the total marks for JEE Advanced 2026 is 360
