IT BHU was established in 1919 and is known as one of the top premier institutes in India. It was renamed IIT BHU in 2012. The campus has an area of 400 acres and is located in the city of Varanasi. IIT BHU is also accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). In addition, according to the NIRF Ranking-2020, it is placed 11th among the top engineering institutions.

IIT BHU Courses

There are 14 departments and three inter-disciplinary schools at the Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi, which offer undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes. BTech, Bpharm, BArch, MTech, MPharm, MSc, PhD, Integrated MTech and Integrated Dual Degree are some of the programmes offered by these departments.


The institute accepts admission through the following entrance exams: JEE Advanced/ GATE/ GPAT/ IIT JAM/ NET/ UGC/CSIR-NET. JEE Advanced


One must hold a BTech or equivalent degree in the relevant discipline to be eligible for the IIT BHU M.Tech Programme. The candidates are also required to score at least 60% aggregate in the qualifying examination or 6.0 CGPA on a scale of 10.



Candidates need to have a bachelor’s degree in the relevant area and must secure at least 55% (General Category) and 50% (Reserved Category) in the qualifying exam.



Candidates should secure 60%  in aggregate in their master's degree and for students with bachelor's degree, 75% aggregate is required.

The students need to appear for the JEE advanced examination and secure a good rank to be eligible to seek admission into IIT BHU with a course of their choice. The cut off rank is spread across 7 rounds and based on the student's ranking and the choice of the course they wish for. However, there is also an eligibility criterion where students need to score above 75% in their 12th board examination. The reserved category has a relaxation of 65%.
