IIT Varanasi (BHU) - Introduction

IIT BHU or IIT Varanasi is one of the premier IITs that was founded in 1919. Earlier it did not come under the IIT tag and was known as the Madan Mohan Malviya College. In the next stage, the college was established as the College of technology or TECHNO and the college of mining and metallurgy MINMET.


In 1968, all the former engineering colleges namely the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), MINMET and TECHNO got merged to form the Institute of Technology or IT-BHU. In 2012, the college got the designation of IIT BHU through the Act of Parliament. IIT BHU is the first institute in Uttar Pradesh that offers a degree course in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals and metallurgy engineering. The college has grown since then and introduced various programs.

The institute today ranks 11th among the colleges in the NIRF 2020 ranking.

The college is spread across 400 acres of land, and it is approved by the UGC or the university grants commission. It is also approved by the AICTE or the All India council of technical education. The institute has over 350 members in its faculty. IIT Varanasi or IIT BHU has 15 departments and 3 interdisciplinary schools: humanities and social sciences. The institute offers a B.Tech program that goes for four years and there are 10 engineering departments in this college. To gain IIT Varanasi admission, one needs to appear in the JEE advanced examination conducted by the IITs.

IIT Varanasi Admission Process

IIT BHU admission to many courses is purely based on merit and the students’ scores in the entrance exams. To seek admission in the IIT-BHU courses, the student should have had at least 75 per cent marks in their class 12 examination and should have appeared for the examination from a reputed board. The SC/ST candidates are given a levy, and they can appear for the JEE examination with a 65 percent mark. Candidates in their top 20 percentile in class 12 are also allowed to appear for the IIT –Varanasi admission process.


The undergraduate course for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch and the five-year dual course of B.Tech is based on their JEE advanced score. The students need to sit for the JoSAA counselling. Here is the detailed procedure of how students can apply to the B.Tech course in IIT Varanasi:

  • The candidates should first check their eligibility to apply for the course.

  • They should qualify the IIT mains examination.

  • They should keep track of the IIT Varanasi cut of that gets declared on the website.

  • The students’ needs to participate in the JoSAA counselling.

  • They also have to get all their documents verified.

  • They then need to pay fees to book their seat in IIT Varanasi.

IIT Varanasi is among the eight new IITs. The admission council usually starts in December, and this is with the registration of the JEE main examination. The application form to apply to the IIT Varanasi course will be published on the official IIT Varanasi website. The candidate needs to download the file and print it and then fill it with their particulars. The student has to fill in his academic qualification details and the course that they desire for. They will also need to scan all the documents that have been asked for. Once they get the seat they choose, they pay the fees to block the seat and secure their place in IIT Varanasi.

  • A scanned copy of their coloured photograph and a certificate of their date of birth.

  • They need to submit a cast certificate in case they fall under the researched category.

  • All the qualifying mark sheets should be scanned.

  • Scanned copy of the scorecard of their entrance examination.

Cut Off

The IIT Varanasi B.Tech and B.Arch programs take admission based on their ranking in JEE Advanced. This is followed by a counselling session conducted by JoSAA. After the JEE advanced results are out the institute specific cutoff is declared. The seat allocation in IIT Varanasi is based on the college cutoff and the choice of the candidate. The JoSAA usually conducts seven rounds of counselling and the cutoffs are declared in each round. There is an opening and a closing rank for each of the counselling rounds. In 2020, because of COVID, only six rounds of counselling was done. The cut off is also divided based on gender, and there are a separate opening and closing rank for the reserved category. For the admission into the 2020-2021 session, the JoSAA released the wide round cutoff in Oct 2020 and the last round of counselling was done in Nov 2020.
