IIT Gandhinagar - Introduction

IIT Gandhinagar is a new engineering and technology institute established in 2008 along with eight other IITs. It is located near the banks of river Sabarmati which is situated in Palaj village, Gandhinagar, Gujarat near the River Sabarmati. The college has a strength of this many candidates across various specializations and programs. Admissions for UG programs are made based on JEE Main and JEE advanced scores.

The institute has been ranked 24 by NIRF 2020 and has been ranked 24th position among India's top 100 engineering institutes by the National institutional ranking system, 2020. The institute promotes critical thinking and encourages interdisciplinarily in a compulsory course, project-oriented learning, and research activities. The university aims for higher quality education in science and technology, which will develop first-class scientists, engineers, entrepreneur ideas, and leaders to meet society's needs.

For pursuing B.Tech at IIT Gandhinagar, the application process starts with the applicants' registration through the institution's official website. Candidates have to visit the official IIT Gandhinagar website and register themselves by filling up the mentioned credentials. Candidates have to attempt the JEE main followed by JEE advanced exams in their first trial. The B.Tech programs generally start from December with JEE Main registration. The final admission to the UG program is made based on JEE advanced results followed by JoSSA counselling. Once the registration is over, applicants will be informed of the final selection of the desired courses in IIT Gandhinagar.

Selection Process



To get eligibility for the admissions to IIT Gandhinagar UG programs, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for JEE Main and eligibility criteria JEE advanced. It includes parameters such as the applicant's performance in JEE Main; several attempts result in Class 12th, age limit, etc. the emissions are then conducted through JoSAA.

Application Process

While applying for admission in IIT Gandhinagar, applicants must apply through the college’s online application form with the relevant entrance examination. B-Tech Applicants should fill the JEE advanced application form through their official website. The application process of IIT Gandhinagar is listed below:

  • Check out the official website of IIT Gandhinagar.

  • Select the course of your choice and click on “apply online” tab.

  • Fill in the required details as you are registering as a new user.

  • After you get the registration number and password login in with that credentials and fill the rest of the application form.

  • Enter academic qualifications.

  • Make the payment and submit the form.

  • Take a print out of the application form for the reference.

IIT Gandhinagar Cut-off Trend: B.Tech

The final cutoff marks for all the UG Courses of IITGN had already been released by JoSAA. This year 6 rounds of counselling have been conducted instead of 7 rounds. The closing ranks (round 6) of 2020 are compared to that of closing ranks (rounds 7) of the year 2018 and 2019 for gender-neutral candidates that are shown below.

The cutoffs of B.Tech specialization subjects have been declining for the last three years. The graph below represents the same.

IIT Gandhinagar offers scholarships to the merit students for different programs.

IIT Gandhinagar Scholarship



Merit cum Means Scholarship (MCM)

Awarded to UG students based on their merits switch covers tuition fees with the monthly fixed stipend for eight months.

Erach and Meheroo Mehta merit scholarships

Awarded to the best 5 students of UG programs who’s JEE advanced ranks are more than 1000 by providing a sum of 8 lakhs every year.

KDG scholarship

Presented to the students who have performed well in educational and non-educational activities in B.Tech 3rd year. An amount of 50000 rupees is offered as a scholarship.

SC-ST scholarship

Awarded to all the B.Tech SC or ST Category students. It consists of a fixed stipend which is paid funded for 8 months, mess fee, and hostel fees.

Despite being the youngest and newest IITs in the country, it had managed to set a new benchmark in placement this year. Among 328 students, 302 students from various courses had participated in the placement from which 112 students have been successfully placed. The companies that it had visited the campus for recruitment are from various sectors such as engineering, education, consultants, technology, fiancee, FMCG, hospitality, NGO, software, pharmaceutical, PSUs, research and development and more.
