IIT Dhanbad (ISM) - Introduction

Formerly known as ISM (Indian School of Mines), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad, is a public technical and research university at Dhanbad, India. Established 95 years ago in 1926, this institution has 18 academic departments across disciplines like Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, and Management Programs.


IIT Dhanbad is the third-oldest Institute which was converted into an IIT. Set up by the British Indian Government following the Royal School of Mines, London, this institution began as an importer of mining and geology education. Today, it has grown into a full-fledged technical institution with various academic divisions. With the approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2016, ISM was converted to an IIT. IIT Dhanbad ranking is known worldwide, and millions of students, each year, aspire to enrol in this institution.

Admission Process

The IIT Dhanbad admission procedure of making admission to the UG Programme is normally done in the July through the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced). This exam is conducted on all-India level by the IITs. The admission cycle at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad B.Tech programmes generally starts from September with JEE Main registrations. This admission is based on the rank of the candidate in JEE Advanced. This process is then followed by JoSAA counselling.


Steps for Online Admission/Registration:

  1. All students must register online by filling up all their information and fee payment details.

  2. Pay as per the IIT Dhanbad fee structure accordingly.

  3. While making the fee payment, select the option “Admission – JEE 2020 – 21” from the dropdown list.

  4. Online Admission / Registration will begin on 15.11.2020 at 8 am and continue up to 22.11.2020, 6 pm.

  5. Before filling the registration form, keep the following documents ready:

    1. Fee Payment receipt in PDF format (Max. 200 KB)

    2. Scanned copy of passport size photo 

      1. A photograph without shadows and red eyes. 

      2. Maximum size 200KB, 

      3. Scanned photograph in .jpg or .png format only.

      4. The file name should be maximum of 10-character length.

    3. Scanned copy of applicant’s signature,

      1. Maximum size 200KB, 

      2. Scanned signature in .jpg or .png format only. 

      3. The file name should be a maximum of 10 character length. 

    4. Scanned copy - Class 10 Mark sheet in PDF format (Max. 200 KB)

  6. Enter valid and correct data in the form as everything will be verified during your first visit to campus at the time of Physical Registration.

  7. The parent will use the mobile number and bank account number to monitor the students’ status online.

  8. For any technical difficulties, while filling the form, you can drop an email along with the screenshot to official email.

  9. You will be issued a successful online registration completion with the Admission Roll number, hostel room number, and Institute email id.

Documents required to be submitted after online Admission/Registration:

  1. Mandatory for all Candidates

    1. Seat Confirmation Letter is given by JoSAA.

    2. Class 10 Mark sheet/Certificate or Birth Certificate 

    3. Class 12 Mark Sheet/Pass certificate of the Qualifying Examination

    4. Medical Certificate in the specified format given on the JoSAA-2020 website in the Annexure 7.

    5. Transfer Certificate (TC)/College or School Leaving Certificate/Migration Certificate

    6. Anti-ragging affidavit duly signed by the candidate along with his/her parents or guardians.

  2. After successfully filling this form, the student will receive the Student's Anti Ragging Undertaking and the Parent’s Anti Ragging Undertaking through email. 

  3. Print both the Undertakings, read them carefully and sign at designated places and then upload.

  4. Additional documents (if applicable):

    1. Category Certificate (SC /ST/ OBC-NCL / GEN-EWS), if applicable. It must be in the format provided in the information Brochure of JEE (Advanced) 2020 or as per the format provided by the Government of India (available on the JoSAA-2020 website).

    2. Certificate for PwD (Persons with Disabilities), if applicable, in the format provided in the information Brochure of JEE (Advanced) 2020.

    3. OCI / PIO, if applicable.

    4. Passport / Citizenship certificate, if applicable.

    5. “Application for fee waiver” duly filled with all necessary and supporting documents (if applicable).

  5. How to make document submission: 

    1. Once you finish the online registration is complete, you will receive the Admission number.

    2. Prepare a single PDF file containing all the necessary documents to be submitted.

    3. Make a file name as your Admission Number. 

    4. Email this file to official mail.

    5. Note: Send the document file from your Institute mail id only which you will receive after the online registration. It takes about 24 hours to activate the email id after registration. 

    6. It is advised that you regularly check the Institute website for all notices.

This finishes off the online admission process. Present all your original certificates at the time of physical registration to confirm admission.


Cut Off

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offers a 4-year B.Tech programme at the UG level. Admission to this programme is according to JEE Advanced rank, followed by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) Counselling. The institute-specific qualifying cutoff is announced only after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2021 result. It helps to manage the seat allotment process. The seat allotment process is made according to the college cutoff and candidates' preference for particular courses and colleges. It takes about seven rounds of JoSAA Counselling to declare the cutoffs. This process is also according to the opening and closing ranks for each of the programme-specific specializations. The cutoffs are further divided into gender and various other categories such as SC, ST, OBC, PwD, etc.

Scholarship

IIT Dhanbad offers numerous Merit-cum-Means scholarships, free ships (i.e. tuition waiver), free basic messing and pocket allowance (for SC and ST categories), and endowment scholarships/fellowships, for the UG students. A designated committee administers these scholarships/fellowships programmes. Students of B.Tech. Programme, who are admitted through JEE Advanced and whose annual family income (from all sources) is less than Five Lakh rupees, can avail a Tuition Fee Waiver.


This Annual Family Income includes the income of both the father and mother (parents) and student from all sources. In case any parent passes away, a death certificate attachment is necessary to avail the waiver. Though this scholarship is not applicable for SC/ST/PwD students as they are completely exempted from any payment of tuition fees.


The other scholarships that are offered are Budhwanti Mrig Memorial Educational Scholarship, Atlas Copco Scholarship, Indrajeet & Satyawati Badhwar Scholarship, ISS Scholarship, and much more.
