The plot of the play deals with the social custom of dowry and the comparison of girls prior to marriage in India. The play depicts the challenges and prejudices a girl has to face in order to get married in Indian society. The play is a form of social commentary on the downtrodden customs and traditions.

The play opens with the preparation in the house of Uma, the girl who was a candidate for marriage. Uma was a graduate, and since the boy’s family did not want to marry an educated girl in the family, Uma’s father lied about the education of his daughter.

The play further proceeds with the conversation between the father of Uma and the father of the boy. Throughout the play, the boy and his father make derogatory remarks about how it is against social norms to let women study.

Towards the end of the play, Uma reveals that she indeed was a graduate and was not interested in marrying such a narrow-minded man. The play ends with Uma’s remark and the father’s disapproval.

About the Author

Jagdish Chandra Mathur was a dramatist and writer who worked in Hindi. On July 16, 1917, he was born. He grew up in a little village near Khurja. His debut play, Konark, catapulted him to popularity. Phela Raja, Shardiya, Dasrath Nandan, Bhor ka Tara, and Oo mere Sapne are some of his other well-known works.

The play referenced in this chapter is one of the author's most well-known works. The author's compositions were written in simple language, yet they depicted characters that had a strong will and mindset. The demand for change and opposition to repressive practices can be observed as recurrent themes in his writing. Mathur passed away on May 14, 1978.

1. रामस्वरूप और गोपाल प्रसाद बात बात पर" एक हमारा जमाना था....." अगर अपने समय की तुलना वर्तमान समय से करते हैं। इस प्रकार की तुलना करना कहाँ तक तर्कसंगत है?

उत्तर: रामस्वरूप और गोपाल प्रसाद बात बात पर "एक हमारा जमाना था..." कह कर जिन मापदंडों पर आज के समय की अपने समय से तुलना कर रहे हैं ,उस तरह की तुलना केवल एक पक्षीय है और अतर्कसंगत है। उन्हें उचित मानदंडों का उपयोग करना चाहिए एवं आज के समय में हुई तरक्की को भी अपने समय से तुलना करनी चाहिए, एवं एक निष्पक्ष तुलना के माध्यम से आज के समय में और उनके समय के अंतर को स्पष्ट करना चाहिए।

2. रामस्वरूप का अपनी बेटी को उच्च शिक्षा दिलवाना और व्यवहार के लिए छिपाना यह विरोधाभास उनकी किस विवशता को उजागर करता है?

उत्तर: रामस्वरूप जिस प्रकार से अपनी बेटी की उच्च शिक्षा को छुपा रहे हैं ,वह यह प्रदर्शित करता है कि वह किस प्रकार से रूढ़िवादी विचार धाराओं के सामने विवश हैं। यह उनकी समाज में फैली अवधारणाओं के प्रति विवशता को प्रदर्शित करता है।

3. अपनी बेटी का रिश्ता तय करने के लिए रामस्वरूप उमा से जिस प्रकार के व्यवहार की अपेक्षा कर रहे हैं,वह उचित क्यों नहीं है?

उत्तर: रामस्वरूप अपनी पुत्री से उसके उचित उच्च शिक्षा वाले आचरण को छोड़कर वह आचरण करने की मांग कर रहे हैं जो कि एक शिक्षित महिला के लिए उचित नहीं है।वह चाहते हैं कि उनकी पुत्री समाज में पुरुष वर्चस्व को स्वीकार करें और उन्हीं के अनुसार व्यवहार करे।जबकि विधि के समक्ष सभी समान है, सब के अधिकार समान हैं कोई किसी से उसकी आशा एवं उच्च शिक्षा की अभिलाषा को नहीं छीन सकता है।इस प्रकार रामस्वरूप कि यह अपेक्षा उचित नहीं है।

4. गोपाल प्रसाद विभाग को 'बिजनेस'मानते हैं और रामस्वरूप अपनी बेटी की उच्च शिक्षा को छिपाते हैं। क्या उत्तर -आप मानते हैं कि दोनों ही समान रूप से अपराधी हैं अपने विचार लिखें।

उत्तर: गोपाल प्रसाद की विवाह को बिजनेस मानने वाली सोच बहुत ही तुच्छ यह विवाह के संबंध की मधुरता था तथा गरिमा को कम करती है।यह उनकी समाज में व्याप्त कुरीति दहेज प्रथा के प्रति उनके विचारों को भी प्रदर्शित करती है। वहीं दूसरी ओर रामस्वरूप भी समान रूप से अपराधी है,क्योंकि वह भी अपनी पुत्री को इस पुरुष प्रधान समाज से लड़ने में कोई सहायता नहीं दे रहे हैं ,बल्कि वह तो चाहते हैं कि वह इसे स्वीकार करें अपनी उच्च शिक्षा को छुपाए।

5."...आपके लाडले बेटे की रीड की हड्डी भी है..."या नहीं उमा इस कथन के माध्यम से शंकर की किन कमियों की ओर संकेत करना चाहती है?

उत्तर: इस कथन के माध्यम से उमा शंकर के निम्न कमियों की ओर इशारा करना चाहती है:

क)शंकर का चरित्र अच्छा नहीं है वह लड़कियों के हॉस्टल में कई बार चक्कर काटते हुए पकड़ा गया है।

ख) शंकर तो खुद का कोई वजूद नहीं है, वह केवल अपने पिता की ही सुनता है और उन्हीं के अनुसार कार्य करता है।

ग) शंकर नौजवान होने के बावजूद भी सीधे से बैठ नहीं सकता यह कथन उसकी सारी कमजोरी की ओर भी संकेत करता है।

6. शंकर जैसे लड़के या उमा जैसी लड़की समाज को कैसे व्यक्तित्व की जरूरत है?तर्क सहित उत्तर दीजिए।

उत्तर: समाज को उमा जैसे व्यक्तित्व की आवश्यकता है जो स्पष्टवादी हो एवं उत्तम चरित्रवान हो। जो अपने माता- पिता एवं अपने स्वाभिमान के लिए आवाज उठा सकें। इस प्रकार के चरित्र वाले व्यक्ति ही समाज की जड़ता को समाप्त कर उसे एक नए चेतन की तरफ ले जा सकते हैं, उससे रूढ़िवादी धारणाओं को निकाल कर एक उत्तम समाज का निर्माण कर सकते हैं। दूसरी तरफ शंकर जैसे व्यक्तित्व के लोग पढ़े लिखे होने के बावजूद भी रूडीवादी धारणाओं को त्याग ते नहीं,ये समाज के विकास में एक अवरोध का काम करते हैं अतः इनकी उपयोगिता अधिक नहीं है।

7.'रीड की हड्डी' शीर्षक की सार्थकता स्पष्ट कीजिए।

उत्तर: जिस प्रकार मनुष्य में रीड की हड्डी का महत्व है, उसी प्रकार समाज में लड़के और लड़कियों का महत्व है। यदि मानव शरीर में रीड की हड्डी का कोई भाग स्वस्थ ना हो तो मानव शरीर का खड़े रह पाना संभव नहीं है।उसी प्रकार यदि समाज की रीढ़ पुरुष और नारी में से यदि किसी एक का शोषण हो,उसे दबाया जाए,समान अधिकार न दिया जाए तो समाज का भी कल्याण असंभव है। अतः "रीड की हड्डी"पाठ का एक उपयुक्त शीर्षक है।

8. कथावस्तु के आधार पर किस एकांकी का मुख्य पात्र मानते हैं और क्यों?

उत्तर: कथावस्तु के आधार पर मैं उमा को इस एकांकी का मुख्य पात्र मानता हूं क्योंकि उमा उमा को इस एकांकी में महिलाओं की प्रतिनिधि के रूप में दिखाया गया है। उसे एक ऐसी नायिका के रूप में प्रस्तुत किया गया है।जो स्पष्टवादी है, एवं स्वाभिमानी है। उच्च शिक्षा ग्रहण करने के बाद भी उसके अंदर संस्कार हैं, और वह अपनी निंदा बर्दाश्त नहीं करती एवं अनुचित बात का विरोध करती है। जिस प्रकार सभी महिलाओं को होना चाहिए।

उत्तर: रामस्वरूप एक ऐसे पिता हैं जो आधुनिक सोच रखते हैं एवं अपनी पुत्री को पढ़ाना चाहते हैं परंतु उसके व्यवहार में उसकी उच्च शिक्षा को छुपा रहे हैं जो उनकी कायरता एवं विवशता को प्रदर्शित करता है।

उत्तर: इस एकांकी में कई उद्देश्य सम्मिलित हैं:

क) समाज में नारी शिक्षा के विरोध वाले विचारों को उजागर कर समाज को जागरूक करना।

ख) समाज में दहेज प्रथा के विषय में जागरूकता फैलाना एवं इसका विरोध करना।

ग) समाज में स्त्री पुरुष की समानता वाले विचारों को फैलाना।

ग) लोगों को बताना कि दहेज प्रथा की कितनी हानियां हैं और यह कुरीति किस तरह समाज को बर्बाद कर रही है।

घ) महिलाओं को उचित सम्मान दिलाने हेतु उन्हें भी उचित रोजगार दिलाकर। गृहकार्य को भी एक रोजगार के रूप में प्रस्तुत कर कर।
