Unit 1: Matter - Nature and Behaviour 

In this unit, the definition of matter like Solid, Liquid and Gas is covered. The unit also covers the characteristics of matter like its Shape, Volume, and Density. You will also study the change of state: Melting (absorption of heat), Evaporation (cooling by evaporation), Condensation, and Sublimation.

Nature of Matter Elements, compounds, and Mixtures are also covered under this theme. Heterogeneous and Homogeneous mixtures, colloids, and suspensions are also covered.

You will also study the particle nature and their basic units like atoms and molecules. Law of constant proportions and atomic and molecular masses are an important part of this unit. 

This theme covers the mole concept relationship of an ole to the mass of the particles and numbers, valency chemical formula of common compounds. Structure of Atoms electrons, Protons and Neutrons, Isotopes, and Isobars are also covered in this unit. 


Theme: The World of the Living

Unit 2: Organization in the Living World

In this unit, you will study Cell, which is the basic unit of life. Following topics are covered under Cell:

  • Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells

  • Multicellular Organisms

  • Cell membrane and cell wall

  • Cell organelles and cell inclusions

  • Chloroplast

  • Mitochondria

  • Vacuoles

Unit 4: Our Environment

This theme covers the physical resources like air, water, soil required for respiration, combustion, and for moderating temperatures. It also covers the movements of air and its role in bringing rains across India, A brief introduction to air, water, and soil pollution is given. A hole in the ozone layer and the probable damages to our environment are covered. You will also study the Biogeochemical cycles in nature.


Theme Food

Unit 5: Food Production

Plant and Animal Breeding and Selection for Quality Improvement and Management are some topics that are covered in the unit. You will also study the use of fertilizers, manures, and protection from pests and diseases, and Organic farming in this unit.
