1. What do you understand by the word brand? List two reasons why building brands is central to advertising?

Ans: By 'brand,' we imply that a product is identified by a name and logo that distinguishes it from similar products in the market. To avoid shoppers becoming confused among the many products on the market, it is critical to building a brand. However, simply labelling the goods is insufficient; purchasers must be convinced that one brand is superior to another. Advertising promotes brands in order to persuade customers to purchase various things.

2. Choose two of your favourite print advertisements. Now, look at each of these and answer the following questions:

  1. What visuals and text are being used in these advertisements to attract my attention?

  2. What values are being promoted in these advertisements?

  3. Who is this advertisement speaking to and who is it leaving out?

  4. If you could not afford the brand that is being advertised, how would you feel?

Ans: “Fighting Against Illiteracy” and “Coca-Cola” are the two advertisements I chose.

Illiteracy Advertisement

Coca Cola Advertisement

  1. Colors and text in bold font are used in the commercial for the anti-illiteracy campaign. Similarly, the Coca-Cola commercial makes use of brilliant colours to draw attention to the product.

  2. The anti-illiteracy campaign emphasises the importance of providing fundamental services to all individuals. The Coca-Cola commercial emphasises the importance of being refreshing and active at the same time.

  3. The commercials for the anti-illiteracy campaign and Coca-Cola are directed at those who can understand English, although they are intended for all citizens.

  4. I would feel left out if I could not afford to participate in the campaign against illiteracy or consume Coca-Cola as I find both advertisements appealing and I connect with their messages.

3. Can you explain two ways in which you think advertising affects issues of equality in a democracy?

Ans:

  1.  Advertising lets us forget about poverty and discrimination by focusing on the lives of the wealthy and famous. It influences our decisions by moulding our thinking, and it has the ability to cause dissatisfaction if a thing is out of reach.

  2. In most cases, only huge corporations are allowed to advertise. If you own a small business, you won't be able to afford to advertise your goods on national television or in national newspapers and publications. This has an impact on small firms, and many small business owners are unable to sell their products and are sometimes forced out of their jobs.

4. Making an advertisement requires a lot of creativity. Let us imagine a situation in which a manufacturer has just made a new watch. She says that she wants to sell this watch to school children. She comes to your class and asks you all to create a brand name as well as an advertisement for the watch. Divide the class into small groups and each group create an advertisement for this watch. Share it with the class.

Ans: Once your organisation has been formed, start working on the brand name. More often than not, a brand's name is crucial in establishing its reputation. After that, divide your group into two-person teams and begin brainstorming advertising ideas. When you're doing this, make sure you know what you want the commercial to focus on. After all, your marketing must be interesting enough to keep people interested. Being a student will be useful because you will know what type of watch you want for yourself. Once all of the teams in your group have shared their ideas, come together as a group to decide which one is the best and debate it with your teacher and the other groups.
