Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Tirupati is an autonomous engineering University situated in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. It was established by the Indian government during the third phase of IITs in the nation in 2014 and finally got initiated in 2015. It had started its educational program under the guidance of IIT Madras. The institute currently operates from Renigunta Road, Tirupati, a temporary campus and has the main campus at Yerpedu. The land area consists of 530 acres in Merlapaka village near Yerpedu- Venkatagiri highway where the permanent campus of IIT Tirupati has been planned. Currently, the institute offers specialized engineering courses in UG, PG, and doctoral programs. In August 2018, a new UG program, chemical engineering got started.
One of the primary objectives of this university is to provide a study atmosphere for the students where they can study, think, create, and do new research by making a curriculum that emphasizes personality, knowledge, and fundamentals. The faculties in the institute are very highly qualified from reputed universities in India and abroad. IIT Tirupati offers 16 courses in various specializations of engineering, science, and technology streams. The B-Tech program provides 5 specializations 4 years or 8th semester hours for a regular study mode.
IIT Tirupati offers UG programs with planned courses to nurture creativity, innovation, teamwork, ethics, quality, communication skills, and community interaction. One must have a JEE advanced score to get admission to UG programs in the institute. In this academic year, the intake capacity for the UG program was 171, which included 142 boys and 29 girls. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) manages the counselling process for the admission of applicants in various IIT institutes. IIT Tirupati provides a B-Tech program for 4 years at the UG level, based on JEE advanced rank followed by JoSAA counselling. The qualifying cut off is announced after the result of JEE advanced to arrange the seat allotment process. The seat allotment is based on the candidate's performance, and college cut off. The cutoff is declared based on opening and closing ranks which is done for 7 rounds for each specific specialization. In 2020 the counselling was conducted for only 6 rounds, and the cutoff was divided into various categories and genders.
The cut off is divided category wise with the opening rank (round 1) and closing rank (round 2) of JoSAA counselling for gender-neutral applicants seeking admission in B tech programs at IIT Tirupati. The same is shown in the table below:
JoSAA had already released the final closing rank for all the UG programs at IIT Tirupati which is usually conducted for seven rounds of counselling, but only 6 rounds are conducted this year. The closing rank of 2020 is compared to that of the closing rank of 2018 and 19 for general quota candidates.
A fluctuating cutoff trend is observed for mechanical engineering as the court of decline in 2019 has been improved in 2020. A graph to represent the above cut-off fluctuating trend is shown below.

IIT Tirupati offers scholarship based on merit through the students for different programs:
IIT Tirupati is one of the newest IITs in the nation which was established in 2015. It got its first placement this year with a decent recruitment report for the pass out batch. The 3rd year B.Tech students, 113 in numbers, had registered in summer internship programs offered from various domains. The overall placement record was 77% where computer science and engineering branch students got 88% placement, electrical engineering branch followed it by a placement record of 85%.
The passing out batch of 2020 had enrolled for placement in the university out of 91 students 70 got placed in well known reputed companies with an average package of 9.18 LPA. The placement sectors include consultancy finance IT sector analytics core engineering R&D companies, and more. Placement registration starts from August every year, and the recruitment process takes place from September till the end of the academic session.
1. Where can we Find the Academic Building of IIT Tirupati? Is it the Permanent Campus?
Ans: IIT Tirupati has two academic campuses:
Permanent Campus: The permanent campus of IIT Tirupati is present at Yerpedu, near Yerpedu - Venkatagiri highway, Merlapaka village, Chittoor district Andhra Pradesh. It is present 22 km away from Tirupati town, 14 km away from Tirupati international airport, 16 kilometres away from Renigunta junction, and 13 kilometres away from Srikalahasti railway station. The campus is well connected with the other campus and places by roadways, railways and airways. The classes for first-year second-year and third-year B-Tech students are conducted here.
Academic Building: This is a temporary campus situated inside the Krishna Teja Educational Institute premises present near Tirupati Renigunta road. It is located 5 kilometres away from Tirupati town 4 km away from Renigunta junction and 8 km away from Tirupati international airport. The classes of 4th year B.Tech students and students of other specializations take place.
The permanent campus site is located in the Merlapaka village of 530 acres where you can find five blocks of hostels, classrooms, workshops, computer centres, and laboratories that are completed and will immediately get started to meet the present requirements.
2. How are the Faculty Members at IIT Tirupati?
Ans: IIT Tirupati has top-notch faculty members from different institutes and IIT Madras. It has 71 highly educated faculties with 7 assistant professors. In a brief period, the total faculty strength will reach 85. One can view them on the official website of IIT Tirupati.
3. What are the Chances of Branch Change?
Ans: The branch change process from one stream of engineering to another is only possible before the end of the 1st year. The change of the branching process is done under the following rules:
The performance of the first year is considered for branch change.
A student has to complete the first-year course to get eligibility for branch change.
Only one student is eligible for the branch change procedure from each department irrespective of the regulation.
Students with lower CGPA are eligible for this offer.
These rules are subjected to timely revisions and decision making of the officials, which will be a final decision.
4. What is the Placement Record at IIT Tirupati?
Ans: In 2019, IIT Tirupati started up its own Career Development Center to provide a platform for personality development, career development, campus placements, and internships for the students. It is managed by a core team of students, staff, faculties, and placement coordinators. Some of these recruiters include L&T group, Bosch, fincare, Yodlee, MathWorks, Honeywell technology and more. In this academic year, 113 students registered for the institution's recruitment program from which 75 students were successfully placed in TCS, Microsoft, Amazon, Ashok Leyland, AECOM, Danieli, and more. Apart from this, all the third-year B.Tech students had successfully registered and their summer internships in the reputed organizations.
5. Where are the Hostels of IIT Tirupati Located? How can one Travel from Hostel to University?
Ans: Both boys and girls hostels exist in the permanent campus at IIT Tirupati which accommodate 860 students, including the freshers of the upcoming year. One can travel through the buses' or vans or any other accommodations from the respective hostels to the university and workshop premises.
