As seen in the table above, the total literacy rate of India is 74.04% in the year 2011. So, there has been a major increase in the literacy rate of the country since the 2001 report of the literacy rates where the literacy rate of India was about 65.38%. The literacy rate of males in the country is 82.14% as compared to 75.85% in the 2001 report. There has also been an increase in the literacy rate of females in the country. We can see that the literacy rate in females for the 2011 census is 65.46%, while in the year 2001, the literacy rate was 54.16% for females.

Coming to the states, we can see from the table that Kerala has the highest overall literacy rate, and that is 93.9%. The literacy rate of males in Kerala is 96.0%, and the literacy rate of females in Kerala is 92.%. Kerala is closely followed by Lakshadweep, with an overall literacy rate of 92.3%. The literacy rate of males in Lakshadweep seems to be at 96.1%, and the literacy rate of females in Lakshadweep is 88.2%. Mizoram comes in third with an overall literacy rate of 91.6%. The male literacy rate in Mizoram is 93.7%, while the female literacy rate in the state is 89.4%.

It can also be seen that Bihar is the state with the least overall literacy rate of just 63.5%. This can be attributed to the poor education system in this particular state. One more thing to notice is the gap between the male and female literacy rate in Bihar. The male literacy rate is about 73.5% in total, and the female literacy rate is 53.3%. There is a pretty huge gap between the literacy rates of the two genders. This could be due to the fact that female education is not much prioritised in Bihar. However, things are certainly looking forward to changing with the implementation of new and advanced policies regarding the improvement of education in different states.
