An Introduction to the Oscar Awards

The Oscar Awards are awarded for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. The Oscar awards are popularly known as the Academy Awards. This award is considered the most prestigious award in the entertainment industry globally. The Oscars are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) every year. The Academy Awards are international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements. There are different categories of awards at the Oscars. The winners of different categories are awarded a golden statuette as a trophy. The golden statuette is officially called "The Academy Award of Merit". The first Oscar awards were organized at a private dinner function at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on May 16, 1929, with a small gathering. Every year people in the entertainment industries are appreciated for their work through the Academy Awards. The recent 93rd Academy award was held on 26th April 2021.

  1. Bhanu Athaiya: Bhanu Athaiya is a costume designer. She has worked in more than a hundred Indian and international films. She received the "Best Costume Designer" award for Gandhi at the 55th Oscar Award ceremony in 1983. This movie was directed and produced by Richard Attenborough. She became the first person of Indian origin who receive the Oscar award.

  1. Satyajit Ray: Satyajit Ray is one of the greatest filmmakers of India of the 20th century. He is a famous Bengali film producer. He received the "Honorary Award" in 1992 at the 64th Oscar Award ceremony for his remarkable contributions to world cinema. Satyajit is the first and only Indian to receive this honorary award.

  1. Rasool Pukutty: Rasool Pukutty is a popular sound designer, sound editor. He is also a mixer of Hindi cinema, Tamil cinema, Malayalam cinema, and Hollywood cinema. He was awarded in the category of  Best Sound Mixing along with Richard Peker and Ian Tape at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony for the film "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2009.

  1. A. R. Rahman: A.R.Rahman is a famous Indian musician and singer.  He had worked in different national and international films. He received the Oscar award for the film Slumdog Millionaire in the category of "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song" at the 81st Oscar Award ceremony in 2009. He was also nominated for the film 127 Hours in the category of "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song" at the 83rd Oscar Award ceremony in 2011.

He was nominated four times in the Oscar Awards for different films but could not become one of the Oscar award winners in India. At the 33rd Oscars Award ceremony, his movie called "The Creation of Woman" was nominated in the "Best Short Film" category in 1961. At the 59th Oscar Awards ceremony in 1987, his film "A Room with a View" was nominated in the "Best Movie" category. At the 65th Oscar Awards ceremony his movie "Howard’s end" was nominated in the "Best Movie" category in 1993 and "The Remains of the Day" in the "Best Movie" category at the 66th Oscar Awards in 1994.
