Any sports or game which is popular and has some historical connection with the country is termed as a national game.  Similarly, many countries have their own national game. The aim of assigning national sport to each country is to encourage physical activities and to convey the importance of sports in today's era to the citizens of the country. Assigning a national sport to a country also makes citizens of the country feel gratified about that particular sport.

A national sport or game is considered to be a popular inherit part of a country or nation.  In American English, the national pastime is often used in place of national sport. Although there are no official parameters towards defining the term "National Sport", but there are some general characteristics the most national sport share:

  • The citizens of a country or nation retains a comprehensive understanding about the rules and objectives of the game.

  • The game or sport is widely played or watched by the citizens of a country or nation.

  • The game or sport retains a long history of  popularity in the country or nation.

In some countries or nations, sports or game can become the national pastime by the approvals of the government such as with Canada or Lacrosse in 1995.

In some countries or nations, where the game or sport retains a long history of  popularity, such as sono wrestling in Japan, or baseball in the United States, the sport or game is often considered as the de facto ( not established by law).
