What is a Number Plate?
An Indian number plate is a metal or plastic plate placed on a motor vehicle or trailer for official identification purposes. All countries are in need of registration plates for vehicles that run on roads such as taxis, trucks, or motorcycles, etc. The registration number plate or registration identifier is a numeric or alphanumeric ID that uniquely identifies the vehicle or vehicle owners within the issuing region's register plate. In a few countries, registration identifiers are unique within the entire country, while in other countries it is unique with state or province.
Components of Vehicles Number Plate
The first two letters of the vehicle's registration number plates belong to the state or union territories in which the vehicle has been registered. For example, if the registration of a car is made in Uttar Pradesh, then the first two alphabets of the vehicle registration plate will be UP.
The next two numbers after the first two alphabets represent the district in which the vehicle was registered. Every region has its own sequential number. Due to this, the government has launched the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in every district of the country. The vehicle owner's area of residence retains the responsibility of the vehicle registrations.
The uniqueness of the third part of the number plate helps to identify the type of vehicle. In case there is no unique number left to assign, then alphabets are generally used to replace the last digit. If someone looks for a customized vehicle number plate, they can pay a premium amount to get the same.
The last part of the number plate is an oval symbol, representing “IND,' which states that the vehicle has been registered in India. In High Security Registration Plates, the oval logo also retains a chromium hologram on the top that resembles a ``Chakra".High Security Registration Plates was introduced in 2005 to decrease the stealing of vehicles.
