Hint: The calcium salt of fatty acids is formed by the process of saponification of a long chain of fatty acids which came from the palm oil, with calcium ions results. It is a type of rumen inert fat with a high level of fatty acid like palmitic acids. The hydrolysis of fat or oil with alkali makes the formation of soap or glycerol.
Complete step by step answer:
To form butanone from calcium salt of fatty acids the decomposition process takes place of calcium acetate and calcium propionate. In the products formed calcium carbonate formation takes place as a byproduct. In this the two compounds calcium acetate and calcium propionate react together under conditions of heating and dry distillation to form butanone the main product and white precipitate of calcium carbonate. The equation for the reaction is given below
\[{{(C{{H}_{3}}COO)}_{2}}Ca+{{({{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}COO)}_{2}}Ca\xrightarrow[dry distillation]{\Delta }2C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}}+2CaC{{O}_{3}}\]
Butanone is also formed by the oxidation of2- butanol. The 2-butanone is a colorless liquid with sharp and sweet odour. It can be manufactured but it is also present in the environment naturally. It is also known as MEK which is methyl ethyl ketone, a flammable liquid compound. The pH value for MEK is 5.5.it is used to remove all types of paints and can be used as seam sealers. It has good ability to evaporate and does nothing to rust.
Note: MEK is used in all types of industries such as in military outfits, aerospace giants. It has good cleaning power and has the ability to dissolve any tough residue. It was banned in California in 2011. It is one of the best solvent thin contact cement when it is used to attach plastic covering.
