Blood vessels are the structures or channels which carry blood and help in distribution to the body tissues. Two closed systems of tubes are formed by vessels that begin and end at the heart itself. One system is the pulmonary vessels, which transport blood from the right ventricle to the lungs and back to the left atrium of the heart. The other system, the systemic vessels, is the one which carries blood from the left ventricle to the tissues of the body and then brings the blood to the right atrium.

From the venules, it continuously flows into larger and larger veins until it reaches the heart. In the pulmonary circuit, the pulmonary veins transport blood from the lungs to the left atrium to the heart. This blood has a high oxygen content because it has just been oxygenated in the lungs. Systemic veins transport blood from the body issue to the right atrium of the heart.

Since the oxygen is utilised for metabolic activities of tissue, the oxygen in blood is reduced. The renal vein is the one which carries the lowest concentration of urea. It is a vessel which carries the deoxygenated blood from the kidney to the inferior vena cava in the heart. Both left and right veins run anterior to their corresponding renal arteries.

Note: The right renal vein receives tributaries exclusively from the kidney, while the left renal vein receives several tributaries from other organs, including the left gonadal (ovarian/testicular) vein, left inferior phrenic vein and left adrenal veins.
