Notifications Regarding National Olympiad Programme in Science

Traditionally, the selection of teams to represent India at the International Olympiad has been a three-stage process, but now it will be a two-stage process for the academic year 2024-25 as a one-time exception.

NSEP, which is a national-level exam that has been conducted every year since 1987 by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) is the first of five stages to qualify in the International Physics Olympiad (InPhO). The NSEP is carried out in English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, and a few other languages.

It is conducted in two levels- the Selection round and the Regional round. In the first stage, the selection round helps in filtering out the candidates. The Regional round consists of deserving candidates, qualifying in the first round from different states who give another exam. There are a total of five stages for the entire Physics Olympiad namely NSEP (stage 1), INO (stage 2), OCSC (stage 3), PDT (stage 4), and IPhO (stage 5). Details of each of these stages have been elaborated on below.

The NSEP exam is scheduled to be held on the 24th of November 2024 by IAPT. The tentative date for the declaration of the NSEP exam results is 31 December 2024. However, the students are advised to keep an eye on the official website for any changes to the date of result declaration.

2. Name all the stages of the National Olympiad Program?

The Science Olympiad program has five stages. For a student to appear for the International Physics Olympiad, they have to qualify in each of the previous rounds. Here, in all these five stages the candidates are tested and the best are selected in the final stage. The stages are-

  • Stage 1 is the National Standard Examinations (NSE)

  • Stage 2 is the Indian National Olympiad (INO)

  • Stage 3 is the Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC)

  • Stage 4 is the Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT)

  • Stage 5 is the International Physics Olympiad (InPhO)

3. Why Should one take part in NSEP 2024-25 Mock Test?

Among the many advantages of writing a mock test for the NSEP examination, mock tests help the candidate to save time by allowing them to assess the time they need to solve the questions as they will already be familiar with them. Often candidates tend to make mistakes while writing the answers although they are familiar with all the topics. Mock tests help to identify the type of error that the students are making. The chances of repeating the same mistake in the actual examination will be significantly reduced.

4. What benefits does the NSEF 2024-25 Mock Test offer?

By taking this mock exam, students can get ready to answer the various kinds of questions they might see on the NSEP test in 2024-25. Students who pass the NSEP exam are eligible to apply for scholarships intended to support their pursuit of a physics career. Outstanding students are also given gold prizes. In addition, they have the choice to join DAE without initially passing the admissions test by scheduling an interview. They will be entitled to participate in the International Olympiad if they pass this exam.

5. Will referring to the NCERT books be enough for the NSEP Exam?

Candidates may use the NCERT books for both grades 11 and 12 to prepare for this exam. These will act as the primary source for helping students grasp the essential concepts in the syllabus. However, for detailed study and better understanding, it is advised that students also refer to other books recommended for NSEP and solve several sample papers, PYQPs and take Mock tests.
