Weathering the Storm in Ersama written by author Harsh Mander is based on a true story of the adventures of a teenager Prashant. He was stranded on the roof of a house for two nights following the dreadful storm that hit Orissa on 27th October 1999.

Ans: Under the leadership of young Prashant, the residents of the town banded together and began to assist one another. They worked together to persuade the merchant to donate rice to the residents at the shelter, gathered fallen tree branches, and built a fire, over which they cooked rice for everyone to eat. When a military helicopter dropped some food boxes but failed to return, the young task force took empty utensils from the shelter and forced the children to lie in the sand with the utensils on their stomachs to signal passing helicopters that they were hungry. The message was received, and the helicopter returned to the refuge regularly, dropping food and other necessities. Women were enlisted to care for the orphans, while men gathered food and supplies for the refuge. Despite their loss, the women began working in a food-for-work program established by an NGO.

Introduction

This story is based on the wretched cyclone that hit Orissa in the year 1999 and the devastation it caused in the entire state. The plot is narrated through a young boy Prashant, who is just nineteen years old. He had already lost his mother 7 years ago in 1992. He decided to visit his friend’s place in Ersama on 27th October 1999. Ersama was 18 kilometres were from his village Kalikuda. While at his friend’s place, a heavy storm started, the kind no one had seen earlier. Soon the weather turned menacing, and many trees and houses got uprooted.

Prashant, along with his friend’s family, took refuge at the roof of their house. They were stranded there for 2 whole days and survived on coconut water from the coconut tree which had fallen on their roof. The cyclone continued for 36 hours, and when the rain subsided Prashant was shocked at the amount of damage this calamity had caused. Cemented houses were fractured, carcasses of animals and humans’ corpses were floating in the water, and all huge trees had fallen to the ground.

When things came down, Prashant immediately wanted to go and see his family as he was scared for their lives. Prashant’s friend’s family begged him not to put his life in danger, but Prashant was adamant, and he started his journey of 18 kilometers on foot with the help of a sturdy stick. He witnessed the macabre scene on his way with bodies of men, women, and children floating all around. Many times he lost the road and had to swim. Finally, he reached his village to find that his home was washed away completely. He finally found his family alive in the red cross society.

Prashant then decided to take the situation into his hand and to alleviate the pain and suffering of villagers by organizing a group of youth who took the effort to get rice for villagers, tended to wounded folks, brought together orphaned children under a polythene shelter, etc. He also organized a cricket match for kids to take their minds off misery and women started looking after kids while menfolk looked after finding food.

Prashant and his group did not let orphaned kids go into institutes set up by the government as they thought it would bring loneliness to them. They instead persuaded the widows and motherless women to provide a foster home for these kids so that they are brought up in their community.
