Yes, the gender discrimination issue is an important one. 

A girl in Indian society is seen as a burden to her father as he has to pay the dowry for her marriage. After marriage, she has to stay at her husband’s home which later becomes her son’s. So, a girl never gets to call the home her own. To become independent and able to call a place her own if there is no one to take care of her, a girl should get a fair share of her father’s property.


5. In what ways are the work of the Panchayat, that you read about in the previous chapter and the work of the Patwari related to each other? 

Ans: Panchayat is a governing body that solves land disputes while Patwari not only keeps land records but also those of land disputes. The taxes and revenues are implied on landowners by the Panchayat while Patwari organises those revenues.

Ans: Yes, in our neighbourhood many women own property themselves. 

Few of the women in our neighbourhood got their property from their parents. Few won their property from their husbands while some have purchased properties on their own.
