Ans: Yes, once my best friend stole some candies from a shop. When I learned about it, I was upset and asked my father what I should do to learn that my friend has done a wrong deed. No, I did not keep quiet. As my father suggested, I directly told my best friend why his action was wrong and went with him to apologise to the shop owner. I helped my friend to pay for the stolen items from my pocket money.

1. “My wife knows best how to run the house.”

Ans: Jumman said this to his old aunt, who transferred all her property to his name. Jumman’s wife did not give enough food to the aunt and quarrelled with her on every little thing. Jumman’s elderly aunt complained about her wife's behaviour to him. She asked Jumman for a monthly allowance and to provide a separate kitchen where she can cook herself. Thus, Jumman uttered these words to her.

2. “But is it right, my son, to keep mum and not say what you consider just and fair?”

Ans: Jumman’s Aunt said this to Algu. The above words were uttered when Jumman refused to pay his aunt and she went door to door in the village for justice. Some people empathized with her while some were indifferent to her. She went to Algu, explained the matter, and asked him to help her. Algu also empathized with her but refused to help her as Jumman was his friend. He did not want to hurt his friend.

3. “What have you to say in your defence?”

Ans: Algu said this to Jumman. Algu was named head Panch i.e., chief of the village. Jumman’s aunt put an allegation on Jumman for ill-treating her.  During the Panchayat meeting to find a reasonable solution, Algu asked Jumman if he had something to say in his defence.

4. “I can’t pay you a penny for the wretched beast you sold me.”

Ans:  Samjhu Sahu said the above words to Algu. Samjhu Sahu brought a bullock from Algu after one of his bullocks died but did not pay in full. Samjhu Sahu used to load too many things on animals and do more than three trips to earn more. He mistreated the animal and did not give enough food and also beat it. The animal fell ill and died soon after. After a few months, Algu asked for the rest of the payment but both Samjhu and his wife quarrelled and refused to pay for it by telling him the animal he sold them was worthless.

5. “Victory to the panchayat. This is justice.”

Ans:  Algu said this in front of the village panchayat. Jumman was chosen as a head Panch by Samjhu Sahu. Algu thought Jumman would take revenge as he supported Jumman's aunt. But after hearing both side's allegations, Jumman decided that Samjhu Sahu was responsible for the bullock's death and thus he had to give Algu the full payment for the animal.

C. Answer the following questions.

1. “Then the situation changed.” What is being referred to?

Ans: The situation being referred to here was Jumman and his wife’s behaviour towards Jumman’s old aunt. Jumman's aunt agreed to transfer her property to Jumman on the condition that he would be responsible for her aunt’s welfare.  This agreement went well until the property was transferred.  After receiving the property, Jumman’s wife started ill-treating the aunt.  His wife did not take care of the aunt properly, such as giving her enough food and tending to daily needs.

2. When Jumman’s aunt realized that she was not welcome in his house, what arrangement did she suggest?

Ans: When Jumman’s aunt realized that she was not welcome in his house, she asked for a monthly allowance from Jumman.She asked him to set up a separate kitchen for herself. She was willing to cook herself so his wife would not be disturbed.

3. What was the villagers’ reaction when the aunt explained her case to them?

Ans: As Jumman’s aunt was being mistreated at her home by Jumman’s wife, she went door to door in the village to explain her case. Some showed sympathy after hearing about the injustice Jumman and his wife were doing, while some were indifferent to her complaints.

4. Why was Jumman happy over Algu’s nomination as head Panch?

Ans: Jumman was happy over Algu’s nomination as a head Panch because they were best of friends. Jumman thought Algu, being his friend, would take his side. Jumman thought Algu would decide in his favour.

5. “God lives in the heart of the Panch.” the aunt said. What did she mean?

Ans: “God lives in the heart of the Panch”, means that the Chief or head Panch is always unbiased and does justice to every innocent. Everybody is equal in the eyes of Panch. In the story Fair Play, despite his friendship with Jumman, Algu did not kill his conscience to favour his friend. According to Jumman’s aunt, justice done by Algu as a Panch was the same as justice delivered by God.

6. What was Algu’s verdict as head Panch? How did Jumman take it?

Ans: Algu’s verdict as a head panch was that Jumman had to pay his aunt for a monthly allowance. If Jumman did not follow the verdict then all the property once given away to him by his aunt would be transferred back to her. After hearing the Algu’s verdicts, Jumman felt betrayed. He ended his friendship and became Algu’s enemy.

7. Algu found himself in a tight spot. What was his problem?

Ans:  Algu had a pair of bullocks. One day, one of his bullocks died and he decided to sell the other. He met a man named Samjhu Sahu and sold his bullock. Samjhu Sahu bought the bullock from him on the condition that Algu would receive payment after a month. Samjhu Sahu was a greedy person who mistreated his animals. He loaded too many items on the bullock and made three trips a day. He beat the animal and did not feed him properly. The bullock became weak and died within a month. When Algu went to Samjhu Sahu after a month to receive his money he refused to pay the money, telling him he sold him a worthless animal which died too soon. Algu not being a wealthy person himself was left with no animal and no money. Thus, his situation was referred to as a tight spot.

8. Why was Algu upset over Jumman’s nomination as head Panch?

Ans: Algu was upset over Jumman’s nomination as a head Panch because they were not friends anymore. After Algu’s verdict in favour of Jumman’s aunt, Jumman got hurt. He ended their friendship and considered Algu as an enemy. Algu thought this time Jumman might take revenge for that.

9. What was Jumman’s verdict as head Panch? How did Algu take it?

Ans: Jumman’s verdict as a head panch was that, as the bullock had no damage or disease or disability when Samjhu Sahu brought it then Algu could not be blamed for its death. Thus, Samjhu Sahu was bound to pay for the bullock to Algu. Samjhu Sahu agreed to pay Algu as per the verdict.

After hearing Jumman’s verdict, Algu was relieved and happy. Algu could not control his feelings and he cheered for the panchayat and the head Panch. He mentioned that head Panch’s voice was blessed by God.

10. Which of the following sums up the story best?
