Introduction to the chapter

Class 10 Hindi Sanchayan Chapter 3, “Topi Shukla” is a story written by Rahi Masoom Raza. Rahi is a prominent writer in Hindi and Urdu language. The poet is well known for his portrayal of the sentiments and conditions of the common men of India in a beautiful manner. The story is one such work of literature by Rahi Masoom Raza.

The story portrays a social commentary on the differences between the people and yet despite all the differences people can still be united and love each other. In this story the Rahi Masoom Raza talks about two families belonging to two different faiths, one family was Muslim, and the other was Hindu. The story portrays the bond between two kids of a family, an interesting thing to note is that the writer uses (topi) and (iffan) to portray the two kids.

The story starts with a description of the families of both kids and their ancestry. Slowly the author uncovers the journey of kids to school and the development of friendship between the two. The story ends with a happy note that the (topi) kid from the Hindu family successfully passed his classes. It was an important event as the kid wanted to maintain his friendship with (iffan) who would have been promoted to a different grade once he passed the exam.

About the author

Rahi Masoom Raza was a very well known Indian writer, playwright, and novelist. Rahi Masoom Raza was born on September 1, 1927, in the Ghazipur area of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. He wrote multiple plays and even worked in the film industry during his career. He died on 15 March 1992.

Raza appears to have penned to reflect his pain and distress at the partitions' negative consequences in the majority of his work. Rahi used his writings to portray how much carnage the partition had caused to the Hindu-Muslim relationship in India. He also wrote about everyday people's life, their goals and dreams, their anxieties, their challenges, their sufferings, and so on. Most of the stories with such a simple concept were told in his voice.

2. इफ़्फ़न की दादी अपने पीहर क्यों जाना चाहती थीं?

उत्तर: इफ़्फ़न की दादी एक जमींदार की बेटी थी,जबकि उनके मायके में वे एक मौलवी की पत्नी थी। उनके यहां बहुत ही दूध,घी,दही रहता था, परंतु मायके में उन्हें यह सब नहीं मिलता था।जिसके लिए वह तरस गई थी इस कारण वह अपने मायके जाना चाहती थी।

3. इफ़्फ़न की दादी अपने बेटे की शादी में गाने बजाने की इच्छा पूरी क्यों नहीं कर पाईं?

उत्तर: दादी का विवाह एक मौलवी खानदान में हुआ था जहां पर गाना बजाना जायज नहीं था। इसलिए वह अपनी इच्छा को पूरी नहीं कर पाई।

उत्तर: जैसे ही टोपी के घरवालों ने यह शब्द सुनावे सब भौचक्के होकर उसकी तरफ देखने लगे क्योंकि टोपी एक हिंदू था और अम्मी शब्द उर्दू का शब्द है,जो कि मुसलमान उपयोग करते हैं। तो उन्हें लगा कि यह इसने कैसे सीखा जब उन्हें सच्चाई पता चली तो इस पर टोपी की पिटाई भी हुई।

5. दस अक्टूबर सन पैंतालीस का दिन टोपी के जीवन में क्या महत्व रखता है?

उत्तर: दस अक्टूबर सन् पैंतालीस को इफ़्फ़न के पिता का ट्रांसफर हो गया,तो इफ़्फ़न को भी उनके साथ जाना पड़ा जिस कारण टोपी ने अपना एक अभिन्न मित्र खो दिया।उसने तय किया कि वह कोई ऐसा मित्र नहीं बनाएगा जिसकी बदली हो जाए। अतः यह उसके जीवन में एक बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण दिन था।

6. टोपी ने इफ़्फ़न से दादी बदलने की बात क्यों कही?

उत्तर: टोपी ने यह बात इसलिए कही क्योंकि टोपी की मां और इफ़्फ़न की दादी का एक ही हाल था।इफ़्फ़न की दादी उसकी मां की ही तरह मधुर बोलती थी परंतु उसकी मां की ही तरह उन्हें घर में बहुत कम लोग बोलने देते थे। वे इफ़्फ़न को कहानियां सुनाती थी और उसे तरह-तरह की बातें करती थी। इन सभी को ध्यान में रखते हुए टोपी ने यह बात कही।

7. पूरे घर में इफ़्फ़न को अपनी दादी से विशेष स्नेह क्यों था?

उत्तर: इफ़्फ़न के माता-पिता उसे डांटते थे उसके भाई- बहन भी उसे परेशान करते थे जबकि उसकी दादी उससे स्नेहा करती थी।उसकी सहायता करती थी,एवं रात को सोते समय उसे हातिमताई, गुलाब कबाली, बहराम डाकू, अमीर हमला की कहानियां सुनाती थी इस कारण वह अपनी दादी से बहुत प्यार करता था।

8. इफ़्फ़न कीदादी के देहांत के बाद टोपी को उसका घर खाली सा क्यों लगा?

उत्तर: इफ़्फ़न की दादी के देहांत के बाद टोपी को उसका घर खाली-खाली इसलिए लगने लगा क्योंकि उसके घर पर केवल उसकी दादी ही थी,जो टोपी की बात समझती थी उसका मजाक नहीं उड़ाती थी,और उसे भी इफ़्फ़न की तरह ही प्यार करती थी।

9. टोपी और इफ़्फ़न की दादी अलग-अलग मजहब और जाति के थे पर एक अनजान अटूट रिश्ते से बंधे थे इस कथन के आलोक में अपने विचार लिखिए।

उत्तर: टोपी, इफ़्फ़न की दादी बेशक अलग-अलग धर्म से थे परंतु जब भी टोपी उनके घर जाता टोपी की दादी उसे स्नेहा से अपने पास बैठा थी। टोपी को उनकी भाषा बहुत अच्छी लगती थी। वे उसे बार-बार कुछ खाने को देती थी,पर वह खाने से मना कर देता था।फिर भी इफ़्फ़न की दादी टोपी को अपमानित नहीं करती इस कारण दोनों का बंधन अटूट था।

10. टोपी नवीं कक्षा में दो बार फेल हो गया। बताइए:

(क) जहींन होने के बावजूद भी कक्षा में दो बार फेल होने के क्या कारण थे?

उत्तर: टोपी बहुत ही बुद्धिमान विद्यार्थी था। पहली साल में वह इसलिए फेल हो गया क्योंकि उसे मुन्नी बाबू और रामदुलारी का कोई न कोई काम करना ही पड़ता था।दूसरे वर्षों मियादी बुखार के कारण परीक्षाएं नहीं दे पाया इस कारण वह फेल हो गया।

(ख) एक ही कक्षा में दो-दो बार बैठने से टोपी को किन भावनात्मक चुनौतियों का सामना करना पड़ा?

उत्तर: पहली बार एक कक्षा छोटे बच्चों के साथ बैठना पड़ा एवं दूसरी बार सातवीं के बच्चों के साथ बैठना पड़ा,जिस कारण उसका कोई मित्र नहीं बन पाया था।अध्यापक भी बच्चों को फेल होने वाले बच्चों के उदाहरण देने के लिए टोपी का इनाम ही इस्तेमाल करते थे,उस पर कभी ध्यान नहीं देते थे, उसका मजाक उड़ाते थे।इस तरह बहुत से भावनात्मक रूप से आहत करते थे।

(ग) टोपी की भावनात्मक परेशानियों को मद्देनजर रखते हुए शिक्षक व्यवस्था में आवश्यक बदलाव सुलझाइए?

उत्तर: बच्चे फेल होने पर भावनात्मक रूप से टूट जाते हैं इस समय एक अच्छे अध्यापक का दायित्व है कि वह उसे सांत्वना दें एवं संभाले। हमें भी शिक्षा व्यवस्था में ऐसे बदलाव लाने चाहिए जिससे कि यदि बच्चे को कोई बात समझ में नहीं आती है या वह अच्छे से नहीं पड़ रहा है,तो उसे अतिरिक्त समय देकर पढ़ाना चाहिए।

11. इफ़्फ़न की दादी के मायके का घर कस्टोडियन में क्यों चला गया?

उत्तर: क्योंकि दादी के घर वाले पाकिस्तान में कराची में जाकर रहने लगे।इस कारण उनके घर पर किसी का कोई अधिकार नहीं था।अतः उसे संरक्षण देने के लिए सरकार ने उसे कस्टोडियन में भेज दिया।
