> The Mond process involves three reaction stages. Nickel usually comes with other impurities, in the form of nickel oxide. In stage 1, the nickel is replaced with syngas, which is a combination of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas. With hydrogen gas, the nickel oxide and impurities react to form an impure solid nickel:
> Afterwards, the carbon monoxide reacts with the impure nickel. But with the carbon monoxide only nickel will react readily-the other metals will not. Nickel and carbon monoxide react to form carbonyl nickel gas, but the impurities remain solid.
$Ni\left( s \right) + 4CO\left( g \right) \to Ni{\left( {CO} \right)_4}\left( g \right)$
Eventually, nickel carbonyl gas is heated to decompose the nickel carbonyl into pure nickel and carbon monoxide.
$Ni{\left( {CO} \right)_4}\left( g \right) \to Ni\left( s \right) + + 4CO\left( g \right)$
The carbon monoxide is then recycled and the nickel is collected.
Hence, from the above process it is clear that the Mond’s process is used for the extraction of nickel.
