What are biomolecules? How are they useful in day to day life?

Hint:Biomolecule means biological molecules. These are the organic molecules produced by the living organism. They are mainly made up of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulphur.

Biomolecules are the organic compounds present in our body which are responsible for carrying out metabolic processes in a living being. The biomolecules can be classified into four types-
Proteins- Proteins are the polymers whose basic unit is amino acid. There are 20 amino acids present in our body. These proteins play a vital role in structural, functioning and regulation of tissues and organs in our body. Example- All the hormones and enzymes are proteins.
Carbohydrates- Carbohydrates are the biomolecules which comprises carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. They are the energy giving molecules. Example- glucose.
Lipids- Lipids are made up of hydrocarbon. They function in making the structure of the body. Membranes of the cell are made up of lipids. Example- Waxes, Vitamins like (A, D, E, K).
Nucleic acid- They are the large biomolecules essential to all living forms. The genetic material RNA, DNA is made up of nucleic acid.

Application of Biomolecules-
Carbohydrates are the energy giving molecules. For example glucose is an immediate source of energy. The food stored in the plant is in the form of starch that is also a carbohydrate.
Proteins- All the hormones and enzymes are made up of proteins. They play a vital role in body building.
Lipids- Lipids are the fats. The food is stored in the form of lipids or fat in adipose tissues.
Nucleic acid- All the DNA and RNA is made up of nucleic acid. They play an important role in protein synthesis.

Note: Bio molecules play a vital role in structural and functional development of our body. The foods we eat are the source of carbohydrates, proteins, and fat.The carbohydrates are the most abundant molecules present in our body.
