Class 12 International English Olympiad 2023-24

IEO, short for International English Olympiad, is an English language test in India. IEO Class 12 syllabus is available here to download for class 12 students. One needs to register for this exam through their school. Usually, Olympiad exams are competitive exams at the school level conducted by Science Olympiad Foundation for class 12 school students based on the school syllabus.

A proper IEO syllabus is needed to get good marks in any of the Olympiads. However, the English Olympiad is basically not that tough and with proper preparation with apt study materials, you can also score well easily. All you need to have is a great grasp of English and a thorough idea of the English Olympiad Syllabus and you can easily get a great score.

Syllabus for Class 12 IEO

There is no prescribed IEO syllabus for classes 11 and 12. For a better score, students can prepare using their current class syllabus and sample papers released by the Science Olympiad Foundation. Some of the things to help you prepare includes:

Topics:

Topic 1: Synonyms: A phrase or word that has an almost similar meaning to that of the original word or phrase.

Example: Synonym for bad is awful, terrible, horrible.

Topic 2: Antonyms: A phrase or word that has the opposite or contradictory meaning to that of the original word or phrase.

Example: Antonym for tall is short.

Topic 3: Nouns: A noun is a word that identifies a person, place, things. Nouns are further classified into various types such as the common noun, proper noun, abstract noun, etc.

Examples of Nouns: Cats, Jack.

Topic 4: Prepositions: Prepositions are words used to describe the relationship between two objects, places or people.

Example: down, up, during. The coffee shop was down the road towards the bus stand.

Topic 5: Conjunctions: Conjunctions are linking words. These words include and, but, or.

Example: What colour do you prefer Red or Yellow?

Topic 6: Adjectives: Adjectives are words that describe or give information about the noun. They can be in different parts of the sentence. Adjectives end with ‘ing’ or ‘ed’.

Example: Charming, fast.

Sentence: Rachel had a pretty dress. Pretty describes the dress.

Topic 7: Articles: Articles are objects or items.

Example: a, an, the. The book was on the table.

Topic 8: Homophones: Homophones are words with similar pronunciations but different meanings. Homophones might also differ in spelling.

Example: new, knew. Eye, I.

Topic 9: Spellings and Analogies: Spellings are letters that words are made with.

An analogy is a comparison between two things.

Example of an Analogy: She is as blind as bat. As blind as describes the comparison between the girl and the bat.

Topic 10: Verbs: Verbs are action words. They describe what the subject is doing.

Example: Riya is throwing the penny. In this sentence, throwing is the verb as it describes what the subject (Riya) is doing.

Topic 11: Homonyms and Homophones: As the name suggests, the words that are similar in how they are pronounced but differ in the meaning and spelling are known as Homophones. Homographs, on the other hand, are spelt the same but aren’t the same when it comes to their meaning or pronunciation. Homonyms can be either of the two (homophones or homographs) or both.

Example: Board and Bored, Be and Bee can be examples of homophones where the words are pronounced the same but clearly have different meanings.

Topic 12: Idioms and Proverbs: Proverbs are usually traditional / centuries old sayings that carry a piece of advice. On the other hand, Idioms contain a figurative meaning and aren’t unlike proverbs, are not moralistic in nature.

Example: Raining Cats and Dogs, Over the moon, are some examples of Idioms. Honesty is the best policy, Good things come to those who wait, could work as examples for proverbs.

Note: Syllabus for the IEO level 2 exam is the same as the level 1 exam, but the level of difficulty is high for the International English Olympiad Level 2
