Chapter 1 – Matter in Our Surroundings (हमारे आसपास के प्रदार्थ)

Chapter 1 “Matter in Our Surroundings” is the first chapter in the Class 9 Science NCERT book. It starts with an introduction about the matter in our surroundings and its definition, its composition, and its properties. 

Further, it talks about the Kinetic Theory of Matter (all matter comprises of small particles, particles of matter have to space between them, are constantly moving – translatory, rotational, or vibrational motion, the particles attract each other), diffusion in solids, liquids, and gases, the force of attraction, states of matter, comparison of characteristics of solids, liquids and gases, rigid form, inter-conversion of the state of matter, the effect of change of temperature and pressure, melting, boiling, condensation, freezing, the effect of change in pressure on the state of matter, latent heat, its types, sublimation, evaporation and cooling effect.

Chapter 2 – Is Matter Around Us Pure (क्या हमारे आसपास के प्रदार्थ शुद्ध है)

This chapter starts with an introduction of matter and continues to talk about the classification of substances into pure and impure substances. Further, pure substances are classified into elements and compounds. Elements can include metals, non-metals and metalloids and can either be liquids, solids, or gases. A comparison of metals and non-metals is given in the chapter. Compounds and their types – inorganic and organic – have also been discussed in the chapter. Students will also learn about mixtures, their two types – homogeneous and heterogeneous, and the distinction between compounds and mixtures. 

The topics like a solution, suspensions, colloids, their differences, and separation of a mixture are also included in this chapter. Chapter 3 – Atoms and Molecules (परमाणु एवं अणु)

The third chapter of Class 9 Science is based on atoms and molecules. It talks about the law of conservation of mass, the law of constant proportion, the law of multiple proportions, and Dalton’s atomic theory. It also discusses the topics atoms, atomic mass, valency, molecules, compounds, ions, molecular mass, mole, and Avogadro number. Several important formulas are given in this chapter, which students must learn while preparing for their exams. Numerical problems based on these formulas and theories can be asked in the Class 9 Science exam.

Chapter 4 – Structure of the Atom (परमाणु की संरचना)

Chapter 4 “Structure of the Atom” includes the topics like atoms, their structure, protons, electrons, neutrons, nucleus, orbits, subshells, valence electrons, atomic number, mass number, notation of atoms, isotopes, and isobars. 

There are seven exercises in this chapter. There is also an additional exercise given at the end of the chapter, containing 19 questions. Chapter 5 – The Fundamental Unit of Life (जीवन की मौलिक इकाई)

Chapter 5 of Class 9 Science begins by talking about the components of living organisms. It talks about the history of cells, their components and structural organisation, differences between osmosis and diffusion, cell walls, plasmolysis, nucleus, the difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells, cytoplasm, cell organelles (endoplasmic reticulum and its two forms (RER and SER), membrane biogenesis, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria), plastids, vacuoles, and the difference between plant and animal cells.

Chapter 6 – Tissues (ऊतक)

The sixth chapter of Class 9 Science is “Tissues”. It talks about how plants have tissues to provide them with mechanical strength, with which they can withstand unfavourable conditions like floods or strong winds. The types of tissues in plants include meristematic tissue, which can be further classified into apical, lateral, and intercalary meristems, permanent tissue, which can be further divided into simple permanent tissues (parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma), complex permanent tissues and several other special tissues. This chapter also talks about animal tissues.

Chapter 7 – Diversity in Living Organisms (जीवों में विविधता)

The classification of organisms based on their form, structure and manner of life is discussed in Chapter 7 of Class 9 Science. The Evolution Theory by Charles Darwin and the classification of living species into kingdoms by different scientists including Carl Woese, Ernst Haeckel and Robert Whittaker have also been discussed in this chapter. Monera, Protista, and Fungi are also mentioned in the chapter. This chapter also mentions the two sub-kingdoms of the plant kingdom including Cryptogamae (Thallophyta, Bryophyte, Pteridophyte) and Phanerogamae (Gymnosperms, Angiosperms). 

Further, it talks about Animalia, which is divided into Invertebrata and Vertebrata. Invertebrata includes Porifera, Coelenterate, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Arthropoda, Molluscs, Echinodermata, and Protochordates and Vertebrata include Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia.

Chapter 8 – Motion (गति)

The eighth chapter of Class 9 Science is “Motion”. This is a Physics chapter that talks about motion, the most common phenomenon in the physical world. It also covers motion and rest, the types of motion (translational – rectilinear and curvilinear, vibrational, rotational), distance and displacement, uniform and non-uniform motion, speed (uniform and variable), velocity, acceleration, plotting a graph and Newton’s laws of motion.

Chapter 9 – Force and Laws of Motion (बल तथा गति के नियम)

Chapter 9 “Force and Laws of Motion,” is based on force and the laws of motion. It starts with a definition of force and talks about different types of forces, including resultant force, balanced and unbalanced forces, muscular force, gravitational force, frictional force, and air resistance. It also discusses inertia, its types (inertia of rest, inertia of motion and inertia of direction), Newton’s three laws of motion, examples, and formulas of the three laws.

Chapter 10 – Gravitation (गुरुत्वाकर्षण)

The tenth chapter of Class 9 Science begins with an example of what happens when a stone is tossed from a great height. It talks about gravitational force, which causes this stone to fall on the ground, without it being pulled or pushed. Sir Isaac Newton came up with the theory of gravitation when he saw an apple fall from a tree. His thesis was that both the earth and the apple are attracted to each other, but since the force of Earth on the apple is enormous, the apple falls. 

This chapter talks about the Universal Law of Gravitation, the Universal Gravitational Constant, the dependence of gravitational force on mass and distance, the gravitational force between two light objects and massive objects, the centre of gravity, application of Newton’s Law of Gravitation, mass and weight, weightlessness, density, the relative density of a substance, thrust and pressure, buoyancy, and Archimedes Principle.

Chapter 11 – Work and Energy (कार्य तथा ऊर्जा)

Chapter 11 of Class 9 Science is “Work and Energy”. It talks about the concept of work and its measurement in Physics. The topics in this chapter include the conditions to be satisfied for work to be done, work done when force is not along the direction of motion, centripetal force, SI unit of work, energy, different forms of energy, kinetic energy, the expression for the kinetic energy of a moving body, momentum and kinetic energy, potential energy, the expression for potential energy, the law of conservation of energy, power, SI unit of power, the commercial unit of energy, and the numerical relation between the SI and commercial unit of electrical energy.

Chapter 12 – Sound (ध्वनि)

This chapter is on the topic of sound. It discusses that sound is a form of energy and is produced by vibrations. It also talks about sound waves and their travel properties. The propagation of sound and sound waves in the air from a tuning fork, need of a medium to travel, experiment to prove it, basic terms related to waves, speed of sound, the reflection of sound, echoes, advantages and disadvantages of echoes, reverberation, practical applications of reflection of sound, musical sound and noise, range of hearing, applications of ultrasound, sonar, determining the ocean’s depth, echolocation, and the structure of human ear are the topics discussed in this chapter.

Chapter 13 – Why do We Fall Ill? (हम बीमार क्यों होते है)

The thirteenth chapter in Class 9 Science begins with an explanation of health and its significance. It includes the topics the difference between “health” and “disease-free”, disease and its causes, acute and chronic diseases, cause of diseases, infectious and non-infectious diseases, mode of transmission (airborne, waterborne, physical contact, vectors), organ- and tissue-specific manifestations, and the principles of treatment and prevention.
